Greenville IDC Limited is seeking an experienced and technically strong Harmonics & Power Quality Engineer to join our engineering team.
This is a specialist engineering role focused on the assessment, analysis and resolution of electrical power quality issues across industrial and commercial electrical systems.
The successful candidate will work with customers, suppliers and internal engineering teams to investigate power quality problems and develop practical engineering solutions.
The role will involve harmonic analysis, power quality measurements, electrical system studies, technical reporting and solution design, with the opportunity to work on a wide range of challenging electrical engineering projects.
THE ROLE
As a Harmonics & Power Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for investigating electrical power quality issues and providing technically sound recommendations and solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Power Quality Analysis
- Carry out detailed power quality investigations.
- Analyse issues including:
- Harmonic distortion
- Voltage distortion
- Voltage fluctuations
- Flicker
- Voltage imbalance
- Transients
- Resonance
- Power factor
- Reactive power
- Electrical disturbances
- Review power quality monitoring data and identify underlying causes.
- Assess the impact of non-linear loads and power electronic equipment on electrical systems.
- Prepare technical reports detailing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Harmonic Studies
- Undertake harmonic studies on LV and MV electrical systems.
- Calculate harmonic distortion and assess compliance with applicable standards.
- Identify potential harmonic resonance conditions.
- Assess the impact of variable frequency drives, UPS systems, rectifiers, inverters, converters and other non-linear loads.
- Develop appropriate harmonic mitigation solutions.
- Evaluate passive and active harmonic filter solutions.
- Carry out before-and-after assessments to verify system performance.
Power Quality Surveys
- Plan and undertake on-site power quality surveys.
- Install and configure power quality analysers and monitoring equipment.
- Collect and interpret electrical measurement data.
- Investigate customer complaints and electrical system disturbances.
- Identify trends and recurring power quality issues.
- Produce clear technical reports for customers and management.
Electrical System Studies
- Review electrical single-line diagrams and system configurations.
- Carry out electrical calculations and system assessments.
- Assess transformer, switchgear, cable and equipment loading where required.
- Evaluate short-circuit levels and system impedance where relevant to power quality studies.
- Assess system resonance and potential interaction between network components.
- Support the design and specification of power quality improvement measures.
TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS
The successful candidate will assist with developing and specifying practical solutions, which may include:
- Active harmonic filters.
- Passive harmonic filters.
- Detuned capacitor banks.
- Power factor correction equipment.
- Dynamic reactive power compensation.
- Voltage regulation solutions.
- Power quality monitoring systems.
- Harmonic mitigation equipment.
- Network optimisation solutions.
You will be expected to understand not only the technical problem but also the commercial and operational requirements of the customer, ensuring that proposed solutions are practical, reliable and cost-effective.
ABOUT YOU
We are looking for an electrical engineer with strong experience or a particular interest in power quality, harmonics and electrical power systems.
You will ideally have:
- A degree/HND/HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
- Previous experience in electrical power systems, power quality or a related engineering discipline.
- Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems.
- Good knowledge of harmonics and power quality principles.
- Experience interpreting electrical measurement data.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and understand electrical single-line diagrams.
- Excellent technical report-writing skills.
- Good communication and customer-facing skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an engineering team.
- Willingness to travel to customer sites when required.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous:

STANDARDS & TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
The successful candidate should have a good understanding of relevant electrical standards and power quality requirements.
Knowledge of standards including:
- IEC 61000 series
- IEEE 519
- EN 50160
- Relevant BS/IEC electrical installation standards
- Applicable DNO/network requirements
would be advantageous.
The candidate should also understand the practical relationship between electrical network impedance, harmonic currents, voltage distortion and resonance.
CUSTOMER & PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES
The role will involve direct interaction with customers and may include:
- Attending customer sites to investigate electrical problems.
- Discussing technical issues with electrical engineers and site personnel.
- Presenting findings and recommendations.
- Preparing technical quotations and scopes of work.
- Supporting sales and commercial teams with technical information.
- Assisting with project planning and implementation.
- Providing technical support following installation.
- Supporting commissioning and verification activities.
The ability to explain complex electrical engineering issues in a clear and understandable way is therefore important.
