Starting rate: £15.50 per hour
Working hours: 06:00 to 16:00
Two 30-minute breaks per day
Overtime available daily, with the facility operating until 18:30 (up to 2.5 hours overtime available)
Saturday overtime available from 06:00 to 13:00, with start times of either 06:00 or 07:00
About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on and proactive MRF Facility Supervisor / Mechanical Operative to join our
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Materials Recovery Facility.
This is a varied role combining operational oversight and supervision, plant inspection, mechanical
maintenance, and breakdown response. The successful candidate will play a key part in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the facility while maintaining equipment and supporting daily processing activities.
You will be responsible for inspecting incoming loads, directing vehicles to appropriate tipping areas, monitoring plant and equipment performance, and carrying out routine maintenance and repairs across the site.
This position would suit an experienced plant operative, maintenance technician, fitter, or supervisor with strong mechanical aptitude and a practical approach to problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect incoming loads and assess waste materials entering the facility.
- Direct drivers to the appropriate tipping locations in accordance with site procedures.
- Oversee day-to-day operations across the facility and support efficient material processing.
- Assist with the safe coordination of vehicle and plant movements, maintaining awareness of interactions between pedestrians, mobile plant, and vehicles.
- Carry out routine inspections of plant, machinery, conveyors, screens, and processing equipment.
- Identify wear, damage, defects, and developing faults, ensuring issues are reported, repaired, or escalated as appropriate.
- Perform preventative maintenance, including lubrication, greasing, adjustments and basic mechanical repairs.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and respond to equipment breakdowns, liaising with management and maintenance providers to minimise downtime.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the facility.
- Maintain an accurate understanding of health and safety within an industrial environment, particularly machinery safety, safe isolation, vehicle movements, and working around mobile and fixed plant.
- Maintain accurate inspection, defect, maintenance, and repair records.
- Support and promote a strong safety culture throughout the site.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience within waste management, recycling, quarrying, aggregates, construction, industrial processing, or a similar environment.
- Good mechanical knowledge with practical maintenance and fault-finding skills.
- Good understanding of health and safety within an industrial environment, including machinery safety, safe isolation, and vehicle movements. Experience working with fixed or mobile plant equipment.
- Ability to identify and respond appropriately to unsuitable, hazardous, or unexpected materials.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work confidently with drivers, operators, and contractors.
- Self-motivated, practical and able to work independently.
- Ability to take ownership of day-to-day facility activities and respond proactively to operational issues.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience working within a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), waste processing or recycling environment.
- Mechanical engineering, maintenance, or plant-related qualifications.
- Mobile plant licences (Loading Shovel, Excavator, Telehandler, MEWP etc.).
- IOSH Working Safely or similar health and safety qualification.
- Previous supervisory, team leader, or operational coordination experience.
