Job Title: Assistant Maintenance Manager

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Assistant Maintenance Manager to support the day-to-day operation of our engineering and maintenance function. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated engineering professional who enjoys combining people leadership, maintenance planning, continuous improvement, and engineering stores management within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Working closely with the Maintenance Manager and Production team, you will play a key role in ensuring maintenance activities are effectively planned, engineering resources are available, and continuous improvement initiatives are delivered to support site performance.
The Role
As Assistant Maintenance Manager, you will support the planning and coordination of maintenance activities, ensuring equipment reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. You will also take responsibility for engineering stores management, stock control, supplier relationships, and purchasing activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Maintenance Manager with the planning, prioritisation and scheduling of maintenance activities.
- Assist the engineering team with fault-finding and troubleshooting activities.
- Review maintenance records and ensure accurate documentation is maintained.
- Attend production meetings to coordinate engineering priorities and corrective actions.
- Support the delivery of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes.
- Assist with service schedules, inspections and compliance requirements.
- Work closely with Engineering and Site Management to monitor maintenance budgets and expenditure.
- Support responses to engineering emergencies, breakdowns and unplanned repairs.
- Produce engineering reports to help drive long-term maintenance improvements.
- Raise and manage purchase orders for maintenance requirements.
- Promote high engineering, housekeeping and safety standards.
- Collaborate with production teams to maximise maintenance opportunities and minimise downtime.
- Support the development and training of maintenance personnel.
- Ensure engineering work instructions and procedures remain up to date.
Engineering Stores Responsibilities
- Manage stock control for engineering spare parts, consumables and fuels.
- Maintain optimum stock levels to support operational requirements.
- Ensure engineering stores are maintained to a high housekeeping standard.
- Implement and maintain accurate stock control systems.
- Manage the ordering of spare parts and consumables.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of engineering parts and consumables.
- Identify critical spares and establish minimum stock and re-order levels.
- Monitor and report on stock usage trends and associated costs.
- Build and maintain strong supplier relationships.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum 5 years' experience in an Assistant Maintenance Manager role or a similar engineering leadership position.
- Previous management or supervisory experience within a fast-paced manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Experience managing contractors, suppliers and external service providers.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Excellent relationship-building and influencing abilities.
- Strong analytical skills with experience managing budgets and cost control.
- Proven ability to take ownership of projects and deliver results within agreed timescales.
- Good understanding of maintenance planning and engineering operations.
Desirable
- Engineering qualification or time-served engineer.
