About the role

This is a postdoctoral appointment working in co-design strategies for a fleet of High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS) for wireless communications. The objective is to optimise fleet design and operation protocols to support a reconfigurable stratospheric communications network that is both robust to atmospheric conditions and meets Quality of Service metrics for ground users at minimum cost.

What you would be doing

You will be joining a team of researchers supporting the development of a new class of High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS). The team has members with a wide range of expertise on numerical simulations, turbulence, aeroelasticity and control. It will build, using state-of-the-art conceptual design methods, the inner layer computational architecture for HAPS sizing and mission planning and will integrate it within a larger analysis framework for communications systems. You will need to devise suitable optimization algorithms for this class of problems and demonstrate them in practice.

What we are looking for

Research-level experience in numerical methods for optimization
Solid foundation in air vehicle design and aircraft performance analysis methods
Strong analytical and mathematical skills
Demonstrable interest in sustainable aviation

Research Associate: Hold a PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

Research Assistant: A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
