Applications are invited for the post of Practice Nurse.
Milton Surgery is a friendly and progressive GP Practice with a reputation for innovation and person-centered care. We are a large, high achieving practice, consisting of 8,000 patients circa, working from custom built premises in the Duddingston area within North East Edinburgh. Milton Surgery is within easy commute of East Lothian, Central Edinburgh as well as in easy reach of Glasgow and Fife and surrounding areas with good rail links and the A1 and A720 providing easy access to the practice and its many local amenities. We are a 5 GP Partnership, supported by 2 Salaried GPs, 2 Practice Nurses (one post is this vacancy), 1 HCA and an experienced administrative team. This is a paperlite and Vision/Docman practice.
A vacancy has arisen due to one of our existing nurses taking a change in career direction and we are delighted to have this exciting opportunity to recruit to our nursing team and due to this we are looking for an enthusiastic, forward thinking, highly motivated and driven Practice Nurse to work alongside our lovely nursing team and doctors to provide an excellent service for our patients. We are looking for a Practice Nurse who thrives in a busy and dynamic working environment.
Applicants should be RGN qualified, be NMC registered and preferably be competent in all aspects of Practice Nursing, to include, Cervical Screening, Vaccinations, Immunisations, Chronic Disease Management and Health Promotion. We are looking for someone who is keen to develop this role further and be involved in clinical initiatives to improve service delivery for our practice population. General practice experience is essential.

Job Description ~ Practice Nurse
Job Summary
To assist in patient care and practice related duties. The post holder will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures.

Communication
- Communicate effectively with other team members

- Communicate routine information that requires tact and persuasive skills, or where there may be barriers to understanding.

Clinical skills
- Undertaking specific clinical activities and tests for named patients, within the scope of established clinical protocols, policies and procedures, namely, Venepuncture; BP Checks; Height; Weight and BMI; Urinalysis; spirometry; cervical smears; chronic disease management and DMARD and anticoagulation monitoring
- Administering of vaccinations eg B12 IM injections
- Ideas about new ways of addressing ever increasing needs
- Development of care plans as well as implementation and evaluation to a high standard.
- Clinical supplies stock management/ordering; sharps and clinical waste disposal.
- Making effective use of IT systems/applications to access patient records and to update clinical details, coding actions as required in line with the clinical contract, enhanced services and practice procedures.
- Building and maintaining relationships with patients and colleagues to provide a seamless customer-focused service to the practice’s client base
- Providing relevant health information to patients and carers as appropriate
- Identifying and referring up to other clinical team members (CTAC, GPs, District Nurses etc) as necessary.

· Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion using computer systems as appropriate.
· Complete data reports for services that you are actively involved in such as the headroom project.

Health, safety and security
- Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages these risks
- Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room that you use so they are clean, safe and free from hazards.
- Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate. Annual first aid training is provided by the practice and it is a requirement that you attend this
- Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures, monitoring and maintaining equipment within your area of responsibility
Service improvement
- Be aware of and, if appropriate, assist in current clinical audits
- Work with colleagues in the team on the development of current and new services and other initiatives
- Be actively involved in the future development of the practice
