Simply Plastics is a sheet plastics supplier and fabricator. Our saws, lasers and CNC routers are central to the business, and machine availability directly affects our ability to meet customer lead times. At present, a significant proportion of each day is taken up by machine operators locating material and clearing finished work away from the machines.
This role has been created to address that. The postholder will work across both production teams, ensuring material reaches the machines and finished panels move through to packing without delay.
Key responsibilities
- Interpreting works orders containing multiple line items and identifying, from stock and offcuts held on site, which sheets each part should be cut from, selecting the correct colour and thickness and maximising material yield
- Retrieving sheet material from racking and repositioning pallets so that material is prepared and available in advance of the operator requiring it
- Off-loading CNC router beds. A completed sheet may contain 20 to 30 panels spanning multiple customer orders; each panel must be labelled with its order number, deburred, grouped by order and transferred to the packing team
- Measuring finished panels prior to packing using a tape measure and vernier calipers
- Clearing scrap material and maintaining a tidy and safe working area around the machines
- Maintaining the organisation of stock and offcuts within the racking, ensuring material is correctly stored, clearly identifiable and readily accessible
- Managing waste streams across the production areas, including rotating full containers, arranging collections and ensuring recycling is correctly segregated
- Receiving incoming material deliveries alongside the existing goods-in resource, checking that goods received match the purchase order in specification and quantity, and reporting any discrepancies, shortages or damage. The postholder will also provide full cover for this function during periods of absence
Essential requirements
Counterbalance forklift. A current counterbalance licence, or a minimum of two years' recent counterbalance experience. Full RTITB certification will be provided in-house at the company's cost.
Material yield judgement. The ability to assess an order against available stock and offcuts and determine which sheet each part should be cut from.
Accuracy with numbers and documentation. Matching panels to the correct order number, labelling accurately, measuring to [±Xmm] using a tape measure and vernier calipers, and checking delivered goods against purchase order documentation.
Physical capability. The role involves standing throughout the working day, manual handling of sheet material and the movement of pallets.
Desirable
- Experience working with plastics, timber, sheet metal, glazing, worktops or other sheet materials
- Previous experience in a machine shop or fabrication environment
Location
The role is based at our current premises in Colchester, CO2 8HH. The business is relocating in March 2027 to new premises at CO7 7QL, and the role will transfer to that site. Applicants should be satisfied that they are able to travel to both locations.
Working environment
This is a hands-on, physical role within a busy production workshop, working in close proximity to operating machinery. The environment is noisy and dusty, and the duties are consistent from day to day. Appropriate PPE is provided.
