Job Title: Bank Café/Kitchen Assistant

Reporting to: Services Manager

Pay: £13.45 hourly rate

Shift: Saturday

Hours: 9.30am to 2.30pm

Contract Type: Bank

Location: Sage House, Tangmere, PO20 2FP & Local Community

Overview

We are seeking a warm, motivated and proactive individual to join our Café team at Sage House. This is a rewarding role within a friendly, values‑driven charity, supporting people affected by dementia and those close to them. You will work as part of a compassionate and collaborative team, building meaningful relationships and helping to make a positive difference within the local community.

Job Purpose

This is a hands-on role which will deliver quality, friendly catering services for Sage House Tangmere. This will include assisting with preparation of light meals, keeping the cafe and kitchen area’s clean and tidy and representing our Charity in a positive and friendly welcoming manner. The Café/Kitchen Assistant will work with other staff and volunteers to provide a great service to all our customers. If you are a team player willing to assist in the kitchen and café, then this could be the ideal role for you!

Responsibilites

The specific responsibilities of the role may change to meet the needs of the charity and its customers. Key responsibilities include:

Providing a friendly welcome to all visitors and offer excellent standards of customer service and care to ensure the smooth running of the kitchen and café while delivering customer satisfaction. Be polite, approachable, patient and attentive at all times
Learn quickly and be able to work well within a team of staff and volunteers. Provide support and direction to volunteers assisting in the kitchen and cafe
Be comfortable working in a busy environment and being able to multitask
Prepare the café for the day, this may involve moving chairs & tables, wiping tables, stocking the fridge with food and drinks
Be adept at taking and recalling orders accurately and processing payments for orders by cash and card by using the till
Serving customers efficiently with food and drinks at the counter and taking food to tables with cutlery and serviettes
Clearing & cleaning vacant tables ready for the next customer
Clean and sanitize all equipment, serving utensils in the kitchen and in the café and restock to correct storage areas, noting any damages and items to be replaced
Use of the kitchen equipment such as dishwasher, microwave and maintaining the coffee machine and hot water urn
Mop all kitchen/storeroom floors with disinfectant after service and wipe down all café tables, chairs and work tops/display areas
Ensure gluten free food preparation is completed separately to non-gluten free food preparation and that serving utensils are kept separately avoiding cross contamination when catering for food allergies
Assist the team to ensure Health, Safety and Hygiene within the kitchen and Café remain compliant with Safer Food, Better Business (SFBB) for correct storage of food and cleanliness of all Kitchen and Café area’s
Support Equality and Diversity and respect customers, clients and other members of staff regardless of gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion or ethnic origin
Maintain confidentiality relating to our customers and visitors
Be an Ambassador of the Charity, supporting the mission, ethos, and values
Contribute positively to continuous improvement of processes and services and work collaboratively with other teams and service areas, building positive working relationships
Any other ad hoc duties that may be reasonably required
Knowledge and understanding of dementia and the issues faced by people living with it as well as their carers is desirable

Knowledge & Skills

Familiar with health, safety and hygiene standards for food preparation
Have exceptional interpersonal skills for working with the general public
Excellent time management and communication skills
Organised and able to use initiative, completing work efficiently while remaining a positive team member and willing to take on or learn new tasks
Adaptable and flexible approach to work
Demonstrate a can-do attitude and responds positively to changing priorities while maintaining attention to detail
Ensures a high-quality standard of service is always delivered

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate or equivalent
Experience of working in a café/kitchen environment
Experience in food preparation and cooking in a catering environment

Desirable

Experience of working in a customer-facing role including cash handling, ideally within the catering sector
Experience of working with volunteers
