Salary £39,984 - £44,977 per annum (pro rata)

Full Time, Fixed Term contract of 19 months assuming a 1 October 2026 start date

About the Role

This post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and supports Professor Steven King and his project 'Welfare fraudsters: A long history 1601-2027'. Put simply, this grant is about finding, reconstructing and then writing about the stories of welfare fraudsters across this long period. The project does not seek to make moral judgements - people end up committing fraud for many reasons, some well beyond their control, or are accused of it when completely innocent - but rather to draw out the complexities of the way that poor people interact with the welfare system as differently constellated between 1601 and the present. You will need:

To be a good storyteller
To be good at rooting out complex life histories and stories or reconstructing them where they are not obvious
To be confident in the identification and exploitation of both online and archival resources across this wide period
To be able to read frankly awful handwriting
To have experience of co-writing
To be willing to travel to archives
To show experience and interest in the histories of the British welfare system
