This is a hands-on role. You will be in the ad accounts, in the analytics, in the classified portals and on the phone to our agencies. If you are looking for a role where you set strategy and a team executes it, this is not that role — we are not big enough and we do not want it run that way.
We will ask you, as part of applying, to tell us about a specific campaign or channel you fixed: what the numbers were before, what you changed, and what they were after. If that is not how you think about marketing, please don't apply.
About us
Minster Motor Group is a used car retailer based in Hull, selling thousands of vehicles a year. We're systems-led and we make decisions off numbers.
Marketing is where our growth comes from. We sell nationally, so our reach is limited by our advertising, not by our postcode.
The role
You own how we generate demand and how much each unit of it costs us.
That means the classified portals, paid search, paid social, our own website and SEO, our brand, and every agency or supplier we pay to do any of it. You'll own the budget and you'll be accountable for cost per lead, cost per sale and the quality of what lands with the sales team.
Crucially, you'll own the relationships with the companies we market through and buy from. That's a real part of this job: holding agencies to their numbers, understanding what we're actually paying for, renegotiating when the value isn't there, and knowing enough about the detail that nobody can bluff you.
What you'll own
- Classified portals — Auto Trader, Motors, CarGurus, eBay Motors and equivalents. Package negotiation, pricing position, listing quality, performance by platform, and honest calls on which ones earn their keep.
- Paid search and paid social — strategy and hands-on account oversight. You don't need to build every campaign yourself, but you do need to be able to open the account and tell whether the agency is doing a good job.
- Agency and supplier management — briefing, KPIs, monthly reviews, contract renewals, and the willingness to change supplier when performance doesn't justify the fee.
- Website and SEO — minstermotorgroup.com. Traffic, conversion, and vehicle detail page performance. We have known technical SEO work to do around canonical tags and page indexing, so you'll need to be comfortable working with developers on technical issues, not just content.
- Attribution and reporting — knowing which spend produces which sales, and reporting it weekly in a way the whole business can act on.
- Brand and content — photography and video standards for our stock, review and reputation management, and how Minster looks and sounds nationally.
- Budget — total marketing spend, allocation across channels, and the marketing cost per unit sold.
What you'll be measured on
- Marketing cost per unit sold — the headline number.
- Cost per lead by channel, with honest attribution rather than platform-reported figures.
- Lead-to-sale conversion rate and lead quality as judged by the sales team.
- Enquiry volume against stock levels — enough demand to move 160+ units a month, in the right mix.
- Organic traffic and vehicle detail page indexation — reducing our dependence on paid channels over time.
- Supplier performance — measurable improvement or replacement, reviewed quarterly.
About you
Essential
- Proven marketing leadership with direct, hands-on ownership of paid channels — you have personally run or closely managed PPC and paid social accounts
- Track record of managing agencies and holding them accountable to numbers, including ending relationships that weren't working
- Strong analytical ability: GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager and spreadsheets are everyday tools, not things you ask someone else about
- Comfortable with technical SEO concepts and able to hold your own in a conversation with developers
- Commercially minded — you think in cost per sale and return on spend, not impressions and engagement
- Willing to be in the detail daily in a business where there is no large team to delegate to
Desirable
- Experience marketing a nationwide product
- Experience with high-volume, fast-turning stock where listings change daily
- CRM and lead management experience
- Video and photography production experience
What we offer
- £50,000 – £62,000 basic depending on experience
- Performance bonus tied to marketing cost per unit and volume
- A genuine route to Marketing Director. This is a growing business and we would rather promote the person who has proved the role than recruit over the top of them
- Full ownership of the budget and the channel mix, with direct access to the owner — decisions get made in days, not quarters
- A business that will actually spend money on what works, because we measure it.
