About the Role

Families do not always need someone to take over. Often, they need someone who can understand what is getting in the way, connect them with the right support, and help turn difficult circumstances into practical next steps.

As a Family Support Worker, you will work directly with children, young people, parents, and carers who may be experiencing challenges affecting family stability, education, wellbeing, or everyday routines. You will provide practical guidance, coordinate support plans, maintain regular contact with families, and work alongside schools, social care teams, and community organisations.

No two cases will look exactly the same. One family may need support improving school attendance and establishing routines, while another may need help accessing community services, managing appointments, or working through concerns identified by professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Build professional and supportive relationships with children, parents, carers, and families.
Complete initial family assessments and identify areas where practical support may be required.
Develop clear support plans with achievable actions and review them regularly.
Conduct scheduled home visits and community-based appointments.
Support families experiencing difficulties with school attendance or engagement.
Help parents establish consistent routines and practical approaches within the home.
Provide information about available local services, programmes, and community resources.
Make appropriate referrals to specialist services when additional intervention is required.
Work alongside social workers, schools, healthcare professionals, and other partner agencies.
Attend multi-agency meetings and contribute relevant information to family support planning.
Maintain accurate case notes, contact records, assessments, and support documentation.
Monitor progress against agreed family goals and record significant changes.
Identify safeguarding concerns and follow established reporting procedures.
Support families during periods of transition or increased difficulty.
Assist parents with accessing appointments, education services, housing advice, or community support.
Encourage positive engagement between families and education or support services.
Prepare written updates and reports for professional meetings where required.
Manage an allocated caseload while maintaining agreed contact schedules.
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Support early-intervention work aimed at preventing difficulties from escalating.

What We Are Looking For

Previous experience supporting children, young people, families, or vulnerable individuals is preferred.
Experience within family support, education, youth services, community work, social care, or a related environment would be beneficial.
Strong communication skills and the ability to build constructive relationships with families.
Ability to handle challenging or sensitive conversations professionally.
Good organisational skills and confidence managing a varied caseload.
Ability to maintain accurate and confidential case records.
Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities involving children and vulnerable people.
Confidence working collaboratively with schools, social workers, and external agencies.
Good written communication skills for preparing case notes and progress reports.
Ability to work independently during home and community visits.
Relevant qualifications in health and social care, childcare, youth work, family support, or a related discipline would be advantageous.
A driving licence may be beneficial where regular community visits are required.
