Transpennine Route Upgrade
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a £10.7 billion Programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.
Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 11 level crossings.
Proposed improvements as will deliver a hard-working, reliable railway for passengers, allowing for trains with more seats, more services and faster journey times.

While prior ETCS or formal Systems Engineering experience is not essential, the ideal candidate will have experience delivering railway engineering projects and be able to demonstrate the successful application of systems engineering principles within their current or previous roles. This may include activities such as requirements management, interface coordination, multidisciplinary collaboration, integration, assurance, problem solving and managing complex technical relationships. We welcome applications from engineers looking to transition into Systems Engineering who can demonstrate strong systems thinking and an ability to work across organisational and technical boundaries.
The ideal candidate will have experience contributing to the coordination, delivery or assurance of multidisciplinary railway projects, including consideration of cross-cutting disciplines such as system safety, interoperability, cyber security, ergonomics, EMC, PRAMS, and operational and maintenance readiness.
They will ideally have a strong understanding of railway signalling systems and how they interface with wider infrastructure, together with some experience in the integration of multiple sub-systems through requirements management, coordinating across railway engineering disciplines and integrating people, processes and technical needs.
The successful candidate will be highly organised, delivery-focused and experienced in working within time and cost constrained project environments. The role requires someone who can take ownership of integration workstreams, manage competing priorities, and maintain momentum in the face of changing requirements. A flexible and pragmatic approach is essential, as is the ability to adapt quickly to emerging issues while maintaining control of scope and deliverables.
Strong attention to detail is critical, as the role requires the specification, review and assurance of work delivered by internal teams, stakeholders and supply chain partners. The candidate will be expected to provide robust technical oversight, ensuring that deliverables are consistent, integrated and aligned with project requirements.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate resilience, sound engineering judgement, and the ability to solve complex problems, ensuring that integration risks are identified and managed effectively throughout the project lifecycle.
