We are seeking an experienced Qualified Teacher (QTS) to provide 1:1 English and Maths tuition for a Year 6 pupil with an EHCP who is preparing for a gradual transition into secondary school.

This is a highly rewarding opportunity to support a bright young learner whose education has been significantly impacted by anxiety. The successful tutor will play a key role in rebuilding confidence, maintaining academic engagement and supporting a positive transition back into education.

About the Role

You will deliver personalised English and Maths tuition within the student's home, adapting learning to meet her emotional, sensory and communication needs.

The primary aim is not accelerated academic progress, but maintaining engagement with learning while preparing her for a successful transition into full-time secondary education.

This is a long-term, relationship-led placement where trust and consistency are essential.

About the Student

The student:

Is currently in Year 6
Has an EHCP with primary needs in Communication & Interaction and SEMH
Is currently undergoing assessment for Autism Spectrum Condition
Has not attended school since March 2025 due to significant anxiety
Previously worked at age-related expectations before becoming unable to attend school
Enjoys learning when sessions feel calm, predictable and low-pressure

Her interests include:

Maths
Arts and crafts
Clay modelling
Drawing and painting
Dancing
Roller skating
Swimming
Football
Roblox
Stranger Things and classic films
Animals and dogs

The ideal tutor will be warm, calm and emotionally attuned, with the ability to recognise when the student is becoming overwhelmed and confidently adapt the session before anxiety escalates.

Previous experience supporting children with anxiety, Autism, Speech & Language needs or Emotionally Based School Avoidance would be highly advantageous.

Teaching Approach

Success in this placement will depend upon relationship-building rather than academic pressure.

The successful tutor will:

Deliver engaging, highly personalised English and Maths sessions
Break learning into small, achievable steps
Use indirect questioning and low-demand teaching strategies
Introduce lighter, practical activities when signs of shutdown appear
Incorporate arts and crafts, tactile activities or short walks in the garden when regulation is needed
Build confidence through encouragement rather than correction
Maintain a calm, predictable routine each session
Link learning to the student's interests wherever possible

Additional Learning Needs

The successful tutor should be confident supporting learners with:

High anxiety
Communication and Interaction needs
Possible Autism
Sensory processing differences
Irlen Syndrome (the student uses blue reading overlays)
Perfectionism and reduced confidence

The student benefits from:

Access to a laptop for longer written work
Visual supports and pre-teaching of vocabulary
Regular movement breaks
Hands-on resources such as paper crafts, doodling materials or fidget items
A calm, quiet environment with the door left open during sessions

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Experience teaching Key Stage 2 English and Maths
Experience supporting pupils with SEN, particularly anxiety, Autism and Communication & Interaction needs
Strong relationship-building skills
A calm, flexible and nurturing teaching style
Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)

Hours & Availability

2 hours per week
Friday is the preferred day
Other commitments mean sessions should avoid:
Monday afternoons
Wednesday afternoons (1:30pm–3:30pm)
Tuesday and Thursday (2:30pm–3:30pm)
Long-term placement until transition into secondary school is complete
