Full job description

Activities Coordinator – Nursing Home

Hours: 10:00am–3:00pm, five days per week
Break: 30 minutes unpaid
Contracted hours: 22.5 hours per week
Job type: Part-time

Job Summary

We are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and creative Activities Coordinator to join our nursing home team.

The successful candidate will plan and deliver a varied programme of meaningful activities that promotes residents’ wellbeing, independence and quality of life. Activities should reflect residents’ individual interests, abilities, cultural backgrounds and care needs, including those living with dementia, physical disabilities and complex health conditions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Plan and deliver a varied weekly programme of individual and group activities.
Spend time getting to know residents and understanding their interests, hobbies, life histories and preferences.
Ensure activities are suitable and accessible for residents with different physical, cognitive and communication needs.
Provide meaningful one-to-one activities for residents who are unable or do not wish to participate in group sessions.
Organise activities such as arts and crafts, music, games, quizzes, gentle exercise, gardening, reminiscence sessions and themed events.
Arrange celebrations for birthdays, religious festivals and other special occasions.
Support residents to access the garden and local community, where appropriate.
Encourage residents to remain active, independent and socially engaged.
Work closely with care staff, nurses, families and other professionals to support residents’ wellbeing.
Encourage relatives and volunteers to participate in appropriate activities and events.
Prepare activity areas and ensure equipment is safe, clean and suitable for use.
Maintain accurate records of activities offered, residents’ participation and their responses.
Obtain feedback from residents and use it to improve the activities programme.
Take photographs, with appropriate consent, and contribute to displays, newsletters and updates for families.
Monitor activity supplies and request replacement materials when required.
Follow residents’ care plans, risk assessments and moving and handling requirements.
Report any concerns about a resident’s health, mood, behaviour or wellbeing promptly to the nurse in charge.
Maintain residents’ dignity, privacy, choice and confidentiality at all times.
Follow the home’s safeguarding, infection-control, health and safety and data-protection procedures.
Complete all required training and attend relevant staff meetings.

Person Specification

The successful candidate should:

Be caring, patient, approachable and respectful.
Have a genuine interest in supporting older people.
Be creative, organised and able to use their own initiative.
Have good communication and interpersonal skills.
Be able to motivate and engage residents with a wide range of needs.
Be comfortable working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Be able to plan and manage an activities timetable.
Have basic IT skills and be able to maintain accurate records.
Be reliable, flexible and committed to providing person-centred support.

Previous experience in a care home, nursing home, activities role or working with people living with dementia would be desirable. However, training may be provided to a suitable candidate who demonstrates the right values, enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

The successful applicant will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check, provide satisfactory employment references and undertake all mandatory training before or following appointment, as appropriate.

Pay: £12.71-£13.00 per hour

Expected hours: 22.5 per week
