Role Overview

We are seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Health & Safety Officer to support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of our Health & Safety Management System. Working closely with the Quality Manager, who has overall responsibility for Health & Safety, and with managers and employees across the business, the successful candidate will ensure compliance with UK health and safety legislation, promote a positive safety culture, and provide practical advice to minimise workplace risk and support operational excellence. This role is instrumental in driving continuous improvement, ensuring legal compliance, and embedding safe working practices throughout the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety Management

Support the development, implementation and maintenance of the company's Health & Safety Management System.
Ensure compliance with all applicable UK Health & Safety legislation and relevant industry standards.
Develop, review and update health and safety policies, procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Provide competent health and safety advice and guidance to managers and employees across the business.
Monitor changes in legislation and recommend improvements to ensure ongoing compliance.
Support the development and implementation of health and safety objectives and continuous improvement initiatives.

Risk Management & Compliance

Conduct workplace inspections and audits to assess compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
Carry out and review risk assessments, ensuring appropriate control measures are implemented and maintained.
Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences, identifying root causes and recommending corrective and preventative actions.
Monitor completion of corrective actions to ensure issues are effectively addressed.
Support regulatory inspections and customer audits relating to health and safety compliance.
Maintain accurate health and safety records and documentation in accordance with company procedures.

Training & Employee Engagement

Deliver health and safety inductions for new employees and contractors.
Coordinate and support health and safety training programmes across the organisation.
Promote employee engagement through toolbox talks, safety briefings and awareness campaigns.
Support managers in developing a positive reporting culture for hazards, near misses and improvement opportunities.
Assist with the operation of Health & Safety Committee meetings and follow-up of agreed actions.
Emergency Preparedness & Occupational Safety
Support the maintenance of emergency response procedures, including fire safety and evacuation arrangements.

Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and best practice.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Confident communicator with the ability to influence positive behavioural change.
Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
High attention to detail and commitment to maintaining compliance.
Proactive approach to continuous improvement.
Ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the organisation.
Professional, approachable and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

Experience in a Health & Safety role within a manufacturing, engineering or industrial environment.
Good working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent recognised qualification).
Experience conducting workplace inspections, audits and risk assessments.
Experience investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Competent in Microsoft Office applications.

Desirable

Experience within the aerospace or other highly regulated manufacturing industry.
Internal Auditor qualification.
Knowledge of ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems.
Knowledge of other management systems such as AS9100, ISO9001 and ISO14001.
Assist with the coordination of emergency drills and business preparedness activities.
Monitor first aid, fire safety and workplace welfare arrangements to ensure ongoing compliance.
Liaise with external providers where required, including occupational health and specialist safety consultants.
Support environmental compliance activities where appropriate, including waste management and environmental awareness initiatives.

Pay: £35,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
