Job Overview
ep8 is a growing residential design and build company looking for a reliable, hardworking Construction Labourer / General Builder’s Mate to join our directly employed team.
You will work alongside an experienced General Builder and Working Foreman on residential extensions, refurbishments and structural alteration projects.
This hands-on role would suit someone with some construction experience who wants to broaden their skills and develop into a general builder. We value attitude, reliability and willingness to learn more highly than experience in every trade.
Duties
- Assisting experienced builders with general building work
- Preparing work areas, tools and materials
- Loading, unloading and moving building materials
- Mixing mortar and concrete
- Assisting with brickwork and blockwork
- Helping with demolition and strip-out work
- Assisting with groundworks, foundations and drainage
- Supporting structural alterations and steel installations under supervision
- Assisting with timber work, insulation and plaster boarding
- Supporting kitchen, bathroom and carpentry work
- Helping with roofing and external works where appropriate
- Clearing rubble and loading skips
- Keeping sites clean, safe and organised
- Preparing materials and work areas for upcoming tasks
- Collecting materials locally when required
About you
The most important qualities for this role are reliability, energy and a positive attitude.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is punctual, dependable and ready to work
- Works hard and takes pride in doing a good job
- Is comfortable carrying out physical construction work
- Keeps a tidy and organised site
- Follows instructions and works safely
- Uses initiative and looks for the next task
- Is polite and professional when working in customers’ homes
- Wants to learn from experienced builders
- Is interested in developing a broad range of construction skills
Previous experience as a construction labourer, builder’s mate, bricklayer’s labourer, carpenter’s mate or groundworker’s labourer would be useful.
Driving and travel
A full UK driving licence is strongly preferred.
If you have your own transport, we can be flexible about where you live, provided you can travel reliably to projects across Oxfordshire and the surrounding areas.
If you do not drive, you will need to live in or close to Thame so that you can meet another team member and travel to site with them.
Qualifications
A CSCS card would be useful but is not essential for the right person.
Previous training in manual handling, working at height, abrasive wheels, plant operation or first aid would also be beneficial. Relevant training can be provided where appropriate.
Training and progression
This is an opportunity to develop a wide range of building skills rather than remain solely in a labouring role.
You will gain practical experience in areas including:
- Brickwork and blockwork
- Structural alterations
- Groundworks and drainage
- Carpentry
- Roofing
- Studwork and plasterboarding
- Kitchens and bathrooms
- External works
- General residential construction
As your skills and experience develop, you will be encouraged to take on greater responsibility and complete more work independently.
Salary and benefits
The salary is £30,000–£33,000 per year, depending on experience and the skills you can bring to the role.
Candidates towards the top of the range will ideally have useful construction experience, be confident using common hand and power tools, hold a driving licence and be able to contribute beyond basic labouring duties.
Benefits include:
- Permanent, full-time PAYE employment
- Monday-to-Friday working
- 20 days’ paid holiday
- Eight bank holidays
- Additional company closure between Christmas and New Year
- Workplace pension
- Paid compulsory training
- Branded workwear
- Company-provided PPE
- Opportunity to learn from experienced builders
- Genuine career progression as the company grows
- Varied residential projects rather than repetitive site work
