About Silmaril
Silmaril Consulting is a Glasgow-based AI consultancy working with small and mid-sized businesses across Scotland. Our clients range from accountancy practices and marketing agencies to charities and healthcare technology firms.
We help these organisations replace manual, fragmented processes with automation that holds up in daily use. Our work runs through three stages: an AI Readiness Audit that identifies the opportunities, build projects that implement them, and a Managed AI Service that maintains the systems and reports on the return.
The role
We are looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join our technical team, working on the automation pipelines and AI systems we build for clients, and on our own internal orchestration platform.
The work is practical. You will be integrating systems that were never designed to talk to each other, building pipelines that need to run unattended without breaking, and implementing AI functionality where it genuinely improves an outcome rather than where it looks impressive.
You will work closely with our Project Manager and consulting team, building to documented process maps and testing against them. Much of what you build goes directly into a client's daily operations, so reliability and clear error handling matter as much as the feature itself.
This is a role with room to grow. You will be exposed to the full delivery cycle rather than a single narrow layer, and you will have direct access to our CTO throughout.
Key responsibilities
- Build and maintain automation pipelines that integrate client systems, APIs and data sources
- Implement AI functionality within client workflows, including LLM integration, prompt design and retrieval over client data
- Develop and extend our internal orchestration platform
- Write clear, maintainable code with sensible error handling, logging and retry behaviour
- Build to documented process maps and support the Project Manager through testing and handover
- Investigate and resolve issues in live client automations, including integration breaks and silent failures
- Contribute to technical documentation for client and internal use
Requirements
We are open to a range of backgrounds here, including recent graduates and people moving across from adjacent technical roles. What matters is that you can show us work you have built. Personal projects, coursework, contributions to open source and previous employment all count.
Essential
- Working knowledge of Python
- Comfortable working with JSON, REST and GraphQL APIs, webhooks and secure API authentication methods
- Version control using Git and Github, including branching and pull request workflows
- An understanding of how to structure code so that someone else can maintain it
- Evidence of projects you have built and can talk through in detail
- Willingness to learn quickly across an unusually broad stack
Desirable
Any of the following will strengthen an application. We do not expect all of them.
- Cloud infrastructure and serverless architecture experience such as Microsoft Azure Functions or Google Cloud Run/Functions
- Automation platforms such as Zapier, Make, Power Automate,Azure Logic Apps or n8n
- Practical experience building with LLMs: API integration, prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation, or agent frameworks such as LangChain/Graph or Google ADK
- JavaScript or TypeScript, and Node.js
- SQL and relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL
- Containerisation and Docker
- A Python web framework such as FastAPI or Flask
- Experience of working within a development team, including code review
- Experience delivering work to a client or external stakeholder
- A degree in computing, software engineering, data science or a related discipline
What we offer
- £16.00 to £19.00 per hour, depending on experience
- 3 days per week, 21 hours, with the option to discuss which days
- Hybrid working, with the majority of time in our Glasgow office
- 30 days annual leave inclusive of public holidays, pro-rata
- Pay reviewed every six months
- A funded technical certification to a value of £1,200 excluding VAT, with no repayment clause. Azure, Google Cloud or an equivalent of your choosing, agreed with the CTO
- Workplace pension through NEST
- Direct access to our CTO and exposure to the full delivery cycle, rather than a single narrow part of it
