Summary – basic function of the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Quality Engineer to join our team in Cramlington on a permanent basis, working onsite five days per week.
This is a senior, hands-on position offering the opportunity to take broad ownership of quality activities across the site and play a key role in shaping quality standards, manufacturing capability and continuous improvement. The Senior Quality Engineer will support the development, implementation and ongoing effectiveness of Enerpac UK’s Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring compliance with applicable site, regional and global quality standards.
The successful candidate will bring strong manufacturing quality experience, including practical knowledge of metallic materials and manufactured components. Working closely with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain and other business functions, they will lead quality improvement initiatives, resolve complex quality issues and help strengthen a proactive culture of quality throughout the organisation.
Job Duties and Responsibilities

Support the development and continuous improvement of the QMS, ensuring ongoing compliance with ISO 9001 requirements and applicable company quality policies, procedures and standards.

Lead and support internal, supplier and customer audit activities, including audit planning, preparation, delivery, reporting and the timely closure of resulting corrective actions.

Coordinate document control, management reviews and other core QMS activities to maintain effective and consistent quality standards across the site.

Establish, monitor, analyse and report key quality metrics, including customer complaints, supplier performance, cost of poor quality, scrap and rework, audit findings, non-conformance closure times and overall QMS effectiveness.

Lead the investigation and resolution of internal, supplier and customer quality issues, using structured root-cause analysis and corrective-action methodologies.

Ensure quality issues and non-conformances are accurately recorded and managed within the Qualityze system, maintaining clear communication with internal and external stakeholders throughout the resolution process.

Apply knowledge of metallic materials and manufactured components when investigating quality concerns, reviewing specifications and assessing product conformity.

Review and interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, dimensional tolerances, inspection requirements and material certification or traceability documentation.

Work closely with Engineering, Operations and Supply Chain to address material-related quality issues, including those connected with machining, heat treatment, surface finish, coatings and other relevant manufacturing processes.

Maintain a hands-on approach to quality assurance, supporting CMM programming, dimensional inspection and component measurement during peak periods, complex projects or when additional technical support is required.

Support operations, logistics and supply chain activities by identifying quality risks and implementing practical, sustainable improvements.

Use non-conformance, scrap, rework and customer complaint data to identify trends and lead continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing and associated operational processes.

Support the strategy to increase in-house manufacturing capability by assessing quality requirements, determining product suitability for insourcing and coordinating associated trials, validation and implementation activities.

Partner with suppliers to improve component and material quality, address recurring issues and strengthen supplier quality performance.

Coach, influence and train employees across different functions to build quality capability and strengthen a culture of continuous improvement.

Manage and support the development of the Apprentice Quality Inspector, including objective setting, workload coordination, technical guidance and ongoing coaching.

Act as a senior quality representative for the Cramlington site, providing guidance on complex quality matters and constructively challenging decisions where quality, compliance or customer requirements may be at risk.

Promote safety awareness and continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency and deliver results while maintaining quality and regulatory compliance.

Represent the company professionally and act as a role model for quality, integrity and health and safety excellence.
Skills and Competencies
-
Strong quality engineering experience within a manufacturing, engineering or similarly regulated technical environment.
-
Practical experience working with metallic materials and manufactured components, with an understanding of material specifications, properties, certification and traceability requirements.
-
Sound understanding of manufacturing processes involving metals, ideally including CNC machining, assembly, hydraulics, heat treatment, surface finishing or industrial equipment.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, geometric and dimensional tolerances, material specifications and inspection requirements.

Experience with component inspection and measurement techniques. Exposure to CMM programming or operation would be advantageous.

Strong knowledge of ISO 9001 requirements and the practical application of Quality Management Systems.

Knowledge and practical application of quality tools and methodologies such as APQP, PPAP, MSA, FMEA, Control Plans, SPC, 8D, root-cause analysis and corrective action.

Demonstrated ability to investigate complex quality issues, analyse data and implement effective, sustainable solutions.

Experience using ERP/MRP and electronic quality management systems. Knowledge of Qualityze would be advantageous.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Power BI or other data analysis and reporting tools would be beneficial.

Education and Experience
-
A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Quality, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Materials Engineering or a related technical discipline would be advantageous. Equivalent relevant industry experience will also be considered.

A minimum of five years’ quality engineering experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment.

Demonstrable experience implementing, maintaining and improving Quality Management Systems.

Extensive working knowledge of ISO 9001.

ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification or equivalent auditing qualification and experience.

Proven experience developing, training, coaching or mentoring others within a quality-driven environment.

Previous experience operating at Senior Quality Engineer, Lead Quality Engineer or an equivalent level would be advantageous. Applications are also welcomed from experienced Quality Engineers who can demonstrate the capability and ambition to step into a broader, more influential position.
