Job Introduction

Are you an experienced theatre technician ready to take the next step in your career?

We're looking for a talented and passionate Deputy Technical Manager to help lead the technical operation at The Core Theatre, part of a vibrant multi-purpose arts venue and flagship community hub.

Located in the heart of Solihull town centre, The Core is a thriving cultural hub comprising a 336-seat raked auditorium, a flexible studio space and an exciting gallery programme. From drama, dance and comedy to live music, exhibitions and community events, no two days are the same.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced theatre professional who combines strong technical expertise with leadership skills and a passion for delivering exceptional audience and artist experiences. As Deputy Technical Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in delivering productions and events across the venue, acting as lead technician, supporting the Technical Manager and helping shape the future development of our technical provision.

As Deputy Technical Manager, you will:

Act as lead technician for productions, events and exhibitions across The Core's performance spaces.
Deputise for the Technical Manager when required and provide leadership during operational shifts.
Line manage, mentor and support our team of casual theatre technicians.
Deliver lighting and sound design for a wide range of productions and events.
Operate and programme specialist theatre equipment including lighting, sound, audio and video systems.
Manage technical equipment inventories and support maintenance and testing programmes.
Be the primary technical contact for visiting companies and hirers.
Support exhibition installation, venue preparation and stage management activities.
Help develop future technical investment and improvement plans for the venue.
Ensure the highest standards of health, safety and professional theatre practice are maintained.

A key aspect of the role will be supporting our annual pantomime, taking a lead technical role throughout the production and performance period and helping deliver one of the venue's flagship events.

What we’re looking for?

You will bring significant experience working in a theatre or live performance environment, alongside the confidence to lead others and make decisions in a fast-paced setting.

You will have:

Extensive technical theatre experience covering lighting, sound and backstage operations.
Experience operating professional lighting and sound systems.
Strong knowledge of theatre rigging, flying and production processes.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Ability to supervise, mentor or train staff and volunteers.
Outstanding communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with performers, touring companies and colleagues.
A strong commitment to health and safety and best practice.
The ability to work independently, take ownership and lead by example.

You must also be comfortable working at height and be available to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays as required by the venue's programme.
