Overview

Lived Experience Gambling Harm FacilitatorOverview

The Prevention Project CIC is looking for passionate, approachable and empathetic people with lived experience of gambling harm to join our growing delivery team as Lived Experience Gambling Harm Facilitators.

Your lived experience may come from your own experience of gambling addiction or harmful gambling, or as an affected other whose life has been impacted by the gambling of a partner, spouse, parent, child, sibling or other close family member.

In this role, you will use your lived experience alongside training and education to help deliver engaging gambling-harm prevention workshops across schools, colleges, training providers, universities, workplaces, professional sport and communities.

We don't believe you need a degree, a professional training qualification or a perfect employment history to make a difference.

We're looking for people who want to take something they have experienced and use it positively to help others understand gambling harm, recognise risk and start conversations earlier.

Initial opportunities will be part-time and sessional, linked to our programme of commissioned and funded delivery. We are beginning conversations with potential facilitators now so that we can identify, train and develop the right people as our delivery team grows.

Responsibilities

As a Lived Experience Gambling Harm Facilitator, you may:

Support and deliver gambling-harm prevention and education workshops across a range of settings.
Use appropriate elements of your lived experience to make gambling harm real, relatable and easier to understand.
Engage with young people, students, employees, athletes and members of the wider community.
Facilitate honest, non-judgmental conversations around gambling, risk and harm.
Help participants understand gambling-related harm, warning signs, advertising, normalisation and the wider influences surrounding gambling.
Encourage earlier conversations and increase awareness of appropriate routes to support.
Respond appropriately to questions and disclosures while maintaining clear professional and safeguarding boundaries.
Work alongside other facilitators and The Prevention Project team to deliver consistent, high-quality sessions.
Contribute lived-experience insight to the continued development of our workshops, resources and prevention work.
Represent The Prevention Project professionally when working with schools, businesses, sporting organisations and community partners.

This role is not simply about standing in front of a room and telling your story. We want to help successful candidates learn how to use lived experience safely and purposefully to create education that people remember.

Who we're looking for

We would particularly like to hear from people who:

Have lived experience of gambling harm, either personally or as an affected other.
Have a genuine desire to use that experience to help other people.
Can reflect on their lived experience in a safe, constructive and appropriate way.
Are approachable, empathetic and able to communicate without judgement.
Are comfortable speaking to groups, or have the potential and willingness to develop their confidence in doing so.
Can communicate with people from different ages, backgrounds and environments.
Are reliable, professional and understand the importance of appropriate boundaries.
Are willing to learn and develop as a facilitator.
Understand that lived-experience work should benefit the people in the room, rather than simply focus on the person telling the story.
Share our belief that conversations about gambling harm should happen before somebody reaches crisis point.

Qualifications and experience

No degree or specific academic qualification is required.

Previous experience in education, training, facilitation, public speaking, safeguarding, recovery services, mental health, professional sport, community work or the gambling-harm sector would be beneficial, but it is not essential.

You also don't need to already be an experienced public speaker or trainer. Training, support and development will be provided to help the right people become confident and effective facilitators.

For us, your motivation, values, lived experience and potential matter more than having the perfect CV.

As some delivery may take place in schools, education settings and environments involving young people, successful appointments and deployment will be subject to appropriate safeguarding and recruitment requirements for the work being undertaken.

Your lived experience

We understand that lived experience of gambling harm can involve extremely personal and difficult periods of someone's life.

We are not asking you to tell us your story in your application.

You do not need to provide details about gambling losses, debt, relationships, recovery or the gambling behaviour of somebody close to you.

There will be an opportunity to discuss your lived experience sensitively during the interview process and explore how you might feel comfortable using appropriate elements of it within this work.

At application stage, we're much more interested in understanding why you want to use your experience to help others.

We're not here to tell people whether they should or shouldn't gamble.

We're here because gambling harm can affect individuals, partners, families, education, careers, finances, mental health and people's futures — and we believe more of those conversations need to happen earlier.
