Full job description

Wills Bros Civil Engineering Ltd have a new role opening ideally suited to a sustainability professional with exceptional analytical and data management capabilities and an interest in the construction industry. This is primarily an office-based role supporting our project delivery teams, with opportunities for site-based working across the UK as the role develops.

The core function of this role is the collection, validation, calculation, analysis and reporting of sustainability, environmental and carbon data. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that data used internally and externally is accurate, robust, auditable and suitable for business decision-making. The role requires an individual who enjoys working with large datasets, undertaking detailed calculations, identifying trends and challenging inaccuracies to maintain the highest standards of data integrity.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Professional work experience is beneficial but not essential.
Recognised master’s Level Qualification in sustainability (such as Sustainable Construction,
Sustainable Development, Sustainability & Environmental Management) or another relevant subject.
Strong mathematical background essential.
Exceptional Microsoft Excel proficiency is essential, including advanced formulae, Pivot Tables, lookup functions, data validation, trend analysis and management of large datasets.
Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to process, interpret and report complex data accurately.
Experience analysing large volumes of information and drawing meaningful conclusions from data.
Good understanding of carbon emissions sources and the different reporting scopes.
Excellent standard of written and spoken English.

The Role (requires)

Tracking, compiling, and reporting sustainability data with guidance and support from Wills Bros Sustainability Manager.
Carbon footprint baselining, forecasting, monitoring, and reporting at a project and organisational level.
Developing new or improved reporting templates and procedures to support sustainability reporting.
Challenge inconsistencies, investigate anomalies and verify data accuracy prior to publication.
Carry out quality assurance reviews of calculations and datasets submitted by project teams and colleagues.
Implementing and monitoring new procedures and initiatives within the business to improve sustainability performance.
Generating case studies which clearly analyse the effectiveness of implemented measures.
Supporting the production and update of various environmental plans including CEMPs, SWMPs, Carbon Management Plans, Water Management Plans, Energy Management Plans, Operational Travel Plans, etc.
Support production and updates of sustainability policies and strategies for the business.
Contributing to BREEAM Infrastructure assessments on projects and communicating requirements to project teams.
Attending and contributing to project environmental meetings.
Carrying out sustainability audits and inspections.
Reporting to Wills Bros Sustainability Manager on project level performance.
Consulting with stakeholders and environmental regulators.
Any other duties required by a fast-changing construction environment.

(Non-essential) Preferred Requirements

Experience of carbon reporting at an organisation or project level.
Experience of using PAS 2080 to manage carbon emissions in construction.
Knowledge of embodied carbon databases and carbon management tools used in construction.
Experience of working on civil engineering projects (in any role).
Qualified BREEAM Assessor or experience with BREEAM sustainability assessments.
Valid CSCS Card appropriate to seniority level.
Knowledge of company environmental reporting requirements such as SECR, ESOS, CSRD etc.
Knowledge or experience of biodiversity net gain calculation methods.
Knowledge or experience of other environmental management processes such as water quality monitoring, pollution prevention, etc.
Good knowledge of environmental legislation relevant to construction.
Membership of a recognised professional body (ISEP/SocEnv/CIWEM/CIEEM or other).
Experience of working to an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
Full valid driver’s licence.
Willingness to travel and work on construction sites supporting the construction team.
