Job overview

The post holder will support qualified nursing staff in delivering high-quality, individualized care to a defined group of service users, their relatives, and carers. This care will be effective, safe, and appropriately delegated for patients attending theatre and outpatient services, under the indirect supervision of registered practitioners.

The role involves always ensuring the safety and wellbeing of service users, while working in a manner that promotes dignity, respect, and human rights through the adoption of person-centered care principles.

In line with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England (Skills for Health, Department of Health), the post holder will:

Be accountable for their actions and omissions.

Main duties of the job

To work alongside all staff in all areas of the patient pathway– ophthalmic outpatient clinics, procedure rooms, theatre, day care including admissions and discharge areas.
To undertake clinical work and related tasks as delegated by qualified nursing staff, following appropriate training and assessment of competency.
To liaise effectively with all stakeholders in the care process, including carers and relatives, aspiring to provide an effective, seamless and integrated service to patients.
To attain departmental competencies in outpatients and theatre after a period of training, becoming a multi-skilled practitioner to meet the needs of the service and
patient-focused care such as vision assessment, admitting day case surgical patient,
instilling eye drops, undertaking base line observations, participating and supporting the WHO checklist, escorting patient to and from theatre and aseptic technique under the supervision of registered nursing staff.
To act as a chaperone if required.
Be a “competent user” of the variety of technical and ophthalmic equipment (computerized and mechanical) and act as a resource person for novice users.
Support the department to ensure all equipment is cleaned and calibrated, following local and Trust policies and procedures
To give clear and concise explanation and test instructions to ensure maximum patient understanding and co-operation takes place, considering patients who have visual impairment, hearing loss, physical or mental disabilities, learning difficulties, dementia, different age groups cultural differences and non-English speaking patient.
Act accordingly to local and trust policies such as infection control, waste disposal, patient identification, surgical checklist, health and safety.
Liaise with CSSD to ensure sterile equipment managed and available for clinical activity.
Stock control, ensuring items are order timely and with budgetary limitations, keeping appropriately in the storeroom.
