HVSS is a specialist high voltage electrical substation engineering company delivering design, installation and commissioning of HV substation systems up to 400kV across the UK. THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented Bookkeeper to join our team at our Watford head office. Reporting to the Directors, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records across all aspects of the business — from day-to-day transaction processing to supplier payments, payroll support and VAT returns.
This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced project-based business. You will work closely with project managers, the accounts team and external accountants to ensure that financial records accurately reflect the company's activity at all times.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Maintaining the purchase ledger — processing supplier invoices, reconciling statements and managing the aged creditors schedule
* Processing and reconciling the sales ledger — raising sales invoices, allocating receipts and chasing outstanding debts
* Bank reconciliations across multiple accounts on a daily and weekly basis
* Processing employee expense claims and staff advances
* Supporting monthly payroll preparation (working alongside external payroll provider)
* Preparing and submitting quarterly VAT returns
* Managing PAYE/NIC submissions and liaising with HMRC as required
* Reconciling credit card and company card transactions
* Maintaining and updating the loan and finance facility register
* Preparing aged debtor and aged creditor reports for management review
* Supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts
* Ensuring accurate nominal coding of all transactions in SAGE 50
* Assisting with year-end preparation and liaison with external accountants
* Maintaining orderly and accurate records in DEXT (receipt capture) and SAGE 50
* Ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as required by the Directors

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Essential:
* Proven bookkeeping experience, ideally in a project-based or construction/engineering environment
* Strong working knowledge of SAGE 50 (essential)
* Experience with DEXT or similar document capture software (desirable)
* Solid understanding of double-entry bookkeeping and VAT
* High level of accuracy and attention to detail
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a busy environment
* Good communication skills — able to liaise confidently with suppliers, clients and internal teams
* Proficient in Microsoft Excel
* AAT qualified or part-qualified, or QBE (qualified by experience)
Desirable:
* Experience in the construction, engineering or energy sector
* Familiarity with CIS (Construction Industry Scheme)
* Experience working with project-level cost tracking
* Knowledge of retention accounting
