Full job description

The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) wishes to appoint a full- time fixed term Senior Research Fellow and Programme Manager in Taiwan Studies.

About the Role:

The postholder will be a member of the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) and they will have responsibility for managing the Oxford Taiwan Studies Programme, and for carrying out academic research and teaching to develop the Programme. The post holder will specialize in Taiwan Studies whilst also having expertise in a disciplinary or interdisciplinary field including but not limited to politics, political economy, international political economy, anthropology, sociology, human geography, economic history, media and communication studies, social policy or gender and sexuality studies. The postholder will lead the day-to-day operations and will develop an exciting programme of academic research and associated communication activities.

The post holder will develop their own independent research projects and will publish academic articles or monographs, edit special volumes and organize workshops on Taiwan and on Taiwan in comparative perspective; develop grant applications; and host visiting scholars and experts from Taiwan. As programme Manager, the post-holder will also take responsibility for overseeing the Programme website and for communicating with stakeholders about the Programme inside and outside the University.

The post-holder will be based in the University of Oxford China Centre, Dickson Poon Building, Canterbury Road, Oxford, OX2 6LU.

The position is full time and fixed term until 30th September 2028, to start 1st October 2026 or as soon as possible afterwards.

About You:

You will have a doctorate in a relevant PhD/DPhil in politics, political economy, international political economy, anthropology, history, sociology, human geography, media and communication studies, social policy or gender studies that focuses on Taiwan or examines Taiwan in comparative perspective, together with relevant research experience.

You will be able to initiate and manage own independent academic research and associated activities with a strong academic publication record in peer-reviewed outlets and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field. You will have sufficient specialist knowledge in Taiwan Studies and a relevant disciplinary or interdisciplinary field to develop research projects and methodologies with the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation
