Full job description

The post holder will:
Provide professional, managerial and clinical leadership to NNU staff in the delivery of evidence based infant and family centred care.
H ave responsibility for operational line management of the NNU team ensuring the effective use of resources and the development & maintenance of the highest standards of care and efficient service delivery.
Provide active leadership, acting as a motivator and communicating effectively with the Neonatal team and wider Multi- professional team.
Be a visible presence and point of contact for carers, families, visitors and staff, providing help and support in problem solving and meeting their needs. Be a role model ensuring the dignity, rights and confidentiality of the infants, their families and team members are protected and maintained.

Work closely with the Head of Governance for Maternity and Child Health providing leadership for the implementation and further development of Clinical Governance, risk and quality improvement in the NNU. This will include the development of and implementation of policy and procedure in the following areas: Clinical Governance and risk management (incorporating clinical risk), family experience, quality and process improvement, clinical effectiveness and Health and Safety.

Create a positive working environment on the NORT which allows staff to show initiative.
To co-ordinate the staffing of the NORT ensuring appropriate skill-mix throughout the 7 day week period, with efficient use of all resources.
To participate in the recruitment and selection of all staff for the NORT.
Work in partnership with other service providers leading to effective care pathways for the infants.
To facilitate and maintain communication within the multidisciplinary team.
Ensure that Children’s safeguarding processes and procedures are followed and that infants in our care are protected from harm.
Ensure that we achieve and maintain 100% compliance with all our safety checks and procedures
Comply with Health and Safety Policies and ensure that all staff, parents and visitors are informed and advised.
Maintain a clean and safe environment.
Ensure that all equipment used and techniques used by staff comply with the service and Trust Policies.
Work collaboratively with the North West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (NWNODN) to review and audit clinical practices and introduce changes to clinical care supported by the NWNODN.
Represent the NORT at regional NWNODN meetings and working groups.
Ensure systems are in place to capture audit data for the National Neonatal Audit Programme (NNAP).

To actively manage the work of the NORT maintaining effective nursing care and adjusting allocation of staff as needed to ensure a well-balanced skill mix to meet demand.
Promote the role of the NN nurse, developing a NN nursing service which works in the best interest of the infants and their families.
To make a positive contribution to the strategic planning of the service.
Promote an effective learning culture suited to the needs of pre and post registration students.
Identify the training and learning needs to support and develop the existing nursing and support staff, and support the provision of skills drills for the wider MDT.
Co-ordinate and monitor the care given by all members of staff in the department, liaise with multi-disciplinary team and outside agencies to ensure continued care delivery, taking appropriate action if care falls below an accepted standard.
In conjunction with all staff develop a philosophy for the unit which demonstrates a clear focus and ensure all staff understands the objectives of the NORT and their role within the team.
To be responsible for the updating and development of clinical practices utilising evidence based practice in conjunction with the Medical team, the Advanced Neonatal Clinical Practitioners and the Practice Development Nurse.
To monitor service delivery and ensure adherence to standards.
Contribute to the development and review of clinical guidelines, SOP, Policies and practices and be responsible for supporting staff in implementing initiatives through effective change management.
Effective management of staff rosters and sickness, absence and training through the e-Roster, planning off duty roster a minimum of 6 weeks in advance managing changes as they occur
Maintain a visible presence in the NORT to provide a clear focus for effective clinical leadership to the nursing and support team
Responsible for the implementation of audit, quality and risk management initiatives in the NORT and publicising and sharing good practice with all stakeholders.
Challenge poor practice and poor standards of care holding staff to account for their actions
Monitoring all cleaning and infection control audits undertaken within the NORT.
Ensuring the safe storage and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policy and legal requirements.
To uphold Child Safeguarding processes and procedures.
Receive and investigate complaints according to the Trust Complaints Procedure, support and implement the recommendations where there are improvements in practice as a result of these complaints.
To take an active role in self-development, objectively reviewing own performance in terms of management, clinical practice and decision making. Identify own learning and training needs, attend all mandatory annual study days.
