Full job description

Pay negotiable subject to experience. Looking for an Electrical Design Engineer (building services) at junior, principal or senior level.

As an Electrical Design Engineer in building services, you will manage the design and implementation of electrical systems, collaborating with project teams to deliver safe, efficient and compliant designs. You will take responsibility for electrical design tasks, work closely with clients, and ensure project deliverables align with UK building regulations, wiring regulations, and sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop electrical design solutions for power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, security, and other electrical systems in full compliance with UK Building Regulations (particularly Parts B, L, M, and P) and the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
Ensure designs meet Building Regulations Part P (Electrical safety) requirements for electrical installations in dwellings and specified premises, including design, installation, inspection and testing procedures.
Apply Building Regulations Part B (Fire safety) requirements for electrical installations, including fire detection and alarm systems, emergency lighting, and electrical safety in means of escape.
Implement Building Regulations Part L (Conservation of fuel and power) requirements for energy efficiency in electrical systems, including lighting controls, power factor correction, and energy monitoring systems.
Address Building Regulations Part M (Access to and use of buildings) implications for electrical installations, ensuring accessible switching, socket positioning, and emergency systems for disabled users.
Design electrical installations in accordance with IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) including circuit protection, earthing arrangements, cable selection, and installation methods.
Conduct electrical load calculations, diversity assessments, and fault level analysis to ensure safe and efficient system operation within regulatory parameters.
Prepare, review, and update electrical specifications, single line diagrams, panel schedules, and cost estimates that demonstrate compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
Oversee electrical drafting and modelling work in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, and other design tools to ensure regulatory compliance and design accuracy.
Conduct site surveys and inspections to assess existing electrical infrastructure, verify installation quality, and ensure compliance with approved designs.
Prepare and review Building Control submissions, electrical certificates, and compliance documentation for electrical installations.
Collaborate with architects, mechanical engineers, contractors, Building Control Officers, and approved electricians, ensuring all project aspects align with client expectations and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) for new connections and upgrades, ensuring compliance with their requirements and standards.
Remain up-to-date with UK electrical standards (IET Wiring Regulations, Building Regulations, BS standards, CIBSE lighting guides, BREEAM requirements) and integrate sustainable practices into electrical design solutions.
Ensure electrical installations comply with relevant British Standards including BS 5266 (emergency lighting), BS 5839 (fire detection), and BS 7909 (temporary electrical systems).

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
2 years min. of experience in electrical building services design within the UK, with demonstrated knowledge of Building Regulations and IET Wiring Regulations compliance.
Thorough understanding of UK Building Regulations Parts B, L, M, and P as they relate to electrical building services.
Comprehensive knowledge of IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) including recent amendments and updates.
Proficiency in UK electrical design software (e.g., Revit MEP, Auto CAD) and familiarity with project management tools.
Extensive knowledge of UK electrical codes, regulations, and sustainable design frameworks (Building Regulations, IET Wiring Regulations, relevant British Standards, CIBSE guides, BREEAM methodology).
Experience with Building Control application processes, electrical certification procedures, and liaising with regulatory authorities and DNOs.
Understanding of CDM Regulations as they apply to electrical design and installation works.
Strong communication and teamwork skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams and presenting technical compliance information to clients and authorities.
Professional registration or working towards Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with IET is desirable.
Knowledge of emerging technologies including LED lighting, smart building systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and renewable energy integration is advantageous.

Pay: £35,000.00-£58,000.00 per year
