Gardener (Grade 4) – Building Services & Maintenance

We're recruiting Gardeners to support Council's Environment & Leisure team. This is a hands-on role, ideal for someone reliable, hardworking, and skilled in horticulture, with the ability to work outdoors in all conditions.
About the Role
As a Gardener, you'll carry out practical amenity horticulture to the highest standards, supporting the Grounds Maintenance Specification and client requirements. You'll work across cemeteries and public spaces, ensuring they are maintained to a professional standard.
What You'll Be Doing
- Grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, and clearing leaves/litter
- Planting bedding plants, trees, and shrubs
- Shrub bed planting and maintenance (pruning, division, renewal)
- Application of chemicals (where certified)
- Maintenance and marking of sports facilities
- General soft landscaping (top-soiling, cultivation, seeding, shrub-bed renewal)
- Operating and maintaining vehicles, plant, and machinery in line with Health & Safety standards
- Reporting defects in tools/equipment and ensuring safe working practices
Requirements
We're seeking individuals with stamina, reliability, and a commitment to high standards.
You'll ideally have:
- NVQ Stage 1 in Horticulture (or equivalent) OR 2 years' practical experience in Grounds Maintenance
- Full UK driving licence (essential)
- Spraying certificate (desirable)
- Knowledge of mechanical plant/equipment and its maintenance
- Experience in horticultural operations, soft landscaping, and use of mowing equipment
- Ability to work independently and to deadlines
- Good communication skills and a flexible, positive attitude
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
