Introduction
Not every skilled tradesperson wants to stay on the tools forever.
At New Meaning Training, we are looking for a Construction Tutor who can pass on practical skills, confidence and life experience to young people who often have not achieved their potential in mainstream education.
This is not a traditional classroom teaching role. Most of our learning happens through doing, building, problem-solving and working alongside learners as they develop confidence, employability skills and practical construction knowledge.
We welcome applications from experienced tutors, construction professionals looking for a career change, site supervisors, tradespeople and trainers. If you have strong construction knowledge and the ability to engage young people, we can support you with gaining teaching qualifications and developing your educational practice.
Many of our learners have SEND, SEMH needs, autism, ADHD or previous negative experiences of education. Above all, we are looking for someone who can build relationships, set clear expectations and help young people believe they can succeed.
Key responsibilities
· Plan and deliver hands-on, engaging Construction sessions that help young people explore creative techniques, build portfolios, and develop skills that matter
· Work 1:1 and in small groups to support learners at different levels of confidence and ability
· Collaborate with your team on scheme of work and lesson planning
· Encourage attendance, routine, and personal accountability in learners
· Support the development of learners’ functional skills in Maths and English as part of their wider learning journey
· Keep accurate records of progress, behaviour, and engagement
· Use a trauma-informed, relational approach to behaviour management, helping learners feel safe, respected and understood
· Reflect on your own practice and contribute to team development and training
· Work alongside support services, parents/carers and external agencies where relevant to promote learner success
You will have:
· Ideally a Level 3 Award in Education & Training and preferably a Certificate of Higher Education, but training can be provided to the right candidate without these qualifications.
· IOSH Working Safely Qualification
· Experience in education, including Scheme of Work and Lesson Plan development.
· Strong conflict management and resolution skills.
· Excellent communication skills to inspire and motivate young people.
· A team-oriented and proactive attitude, with the ability to work independently.
· Proven relationship-building skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
· Empathy and understanding for young people, with alignment to New Meaning Training’s values.
· A passion for helping learners achieve their goals through adaptability and initiative in tailoring learning styles and activities.
· Strong organisational skills and flexibility to meet deadlines and learner needs.
· Attention to detail in data collection and record keeping.
· Professionalism when engaging with learners, parents, and external stakeholders.
· An understanding of or willingness to learn about current social issues (e.g., County Lines, the impact of COVID on mental health).
· A creative flair for developing engaging activities that support individual learner goals.
· Loving Care Approach – Key Competencies
o Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practice and Attachment Theory
o Passion for sharing knowledge and enabling others
o Active, empathetic listener with a curious, open mind
o Committed to strengthening learners’ confidence and skills
o Proactive in self-development, including formal coaching
About Us
New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are a post 16 training and education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 16–25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.
This academic year New Meaning Training will have well over 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire. Many of these learners are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.
Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as “Toolshed.” Ten years on, NMT continues to grow. In Berkshire we’re fortunate enough to have expanded into a second building in Reading to create a quieter space for Creative Art & Design, Achieve Lifeskills and Transition learners. And in our main building we have Construction Multiskills, Sports and Boost Workskills. All incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials and enrichment sessions to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a ‘Transition Support’ programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.
NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
