We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join a dynamic Component Engineering Base Engine Team during a period of significant investment and new product development. The role involves delivering innovative design solutions for complex challenges within New Product Introduction projects, focusing on engine components and subsystems. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary global teams, suppliers, and customers to ensure designs meet durability, functionality, and customer requirements. This position offers the opportunity to work on clean-sheet designs and contribute to cutting-edge developments in engine technology, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and green energy solutions.
The role requires leadership in planning and managing project deliverables, conducting risk assessments, and leading design reviews. The candidate will develop technical drawings and data to support prototype and volume production releases, working closely with suppliers using APQP methodology.
- Design and package engine components including aluminium and cast iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain, drivetrain, and in-cylinder parts.

Contribute to system design development for breather, cooling, FEAD, and lubrication systems.

Collaborate with global multidisciplinary teams to meet customer and functional requirements.

Build and maintain strong supplier relationships.

Plan and manage project and sub-project deliverables, demonstrating leadership.

Conduct risk assessments via FMEA to identify design risks and validation needs.

Lead and participate in design reviews to secure approvals.

Maintain clear communication with peers, team leaders, and stakeholders.

Develop drawings to company standards and prepare technical data for production releases.

Work with suppliers using APQP tools and processes.
- Expert proficiency in complex CAD geometry, specifically CREO 10.

Strong understanding of internal combustion engine operation and subsystems (rotating systems, valvetrain, lubrication, breather, cooling, bolted joints, sealing).

Comprehensive knowledge of casting and machining processes, especially for complex cast iron components.

Minimum six years’ design experience using CAD.

Technical background (HNC or degree preferred) in mechanical or automotive engineering or equivalent experience.

Good understanding of component manufacturing and assembly principles.

Ability to manage and deliver tasks within agreed timescales.

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Experience collaborating with external suppliers to develop design solutions.
- Experience with Team Centre or similar data management software.

Proven experience facilitating and participating in FMEA processes.

Experience in component and engine validation and verification.

Background in off-highway diesel or machinery sectors.

Knowledge of alternative fuels and spark-ignited engines.

This role is fully onsite with working hours Monday to Thursday 8:30am to 4:45pm and Friday 8:30am to 4:15pm. The successful candidate will be part of a team of 12-15 members, including international colleagues, contributing to innovative engine design and sustainable energy solutions.
