Learning Support Assistant (Hearing Impairment Specialist)
Location: Kingston (Secondary Academy)
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Start Date: June 2026
Are you passionate about removing barriers to learning? Do you have an interest in supporting D/deaf identity and helping students with sensory impairments thrive in a mainstream environment?
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Learning Support Assistant specializing in Hearing Impairment to join a highly regarded Secondary Academy. Working under the guidance of a Teacher of the Deaf (ToD) and the SENDCo, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that students with hearing loss have full, equitable access to the curriculum.
The Role
This is not a general LSA position. You will be the "bridge" between the student and the classroom, managing specialist technology and adapting resources in real-time.
Key Responsibilities:
- Specialist Support: Provide daily monitoring and troubleshooting of audiological equipment (Hearing Aids, Speech Processors, and BAHAs).
- Curriculum Access: Differentiate learning materials so students with hearing and visual impairments can access the mainstream curriculum.
- D/deaf Identity: Support and promote a positive D/deaf identity, utilizing the "Deaf Curriculum" alongside traditional subjects.
- Intervention: Deliver 1:1 or small group pre/post-teaching to reinforce key vocabulary and concepts.
- Advocacy: Act as a "Key Worker" for specific students, liaising with parents, Speech and Language Therapists, and medical centers.
- Inclusion: Assist students in navigating social situations, homework clubs, and enrichment activities to build their confidence and independence.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is patient, tech-savvy, and committed to professional growth.
- Experience: Previous experience working with SEND pupils (EHCPs) is essential. Specific experience with hearing impairment or BSL is a significant advantage.
- Knowledge: A basic understanding of the SEND Code of Practice (Assess, Plan, Do, Review).
- Communication: Exceptional sensitivity when communicating with parents and external professionals.
- Ambition: You must be willing to complete a TA Deaf Specialist Level 3 course within two years of starting (fully supported by the school).
Why Join This School?
- Professional Development: A strong culture of self-evaluation and regular training in ASC, ADHD, and mental health.
- Impact: You will see the direct result of your support as students find their "voice" and achieve their desired outcomes.
- Supportive Environment: Work within a dedicated Learning Development department with clear leadership from the SENDCo and Teacher of the Deaf.
Requirements
- High expectations of all pupils and a commitment to safeguarding.
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills to support students up to Key Stage 5.
- The ability to remain organized and maintain high-quality records of pupil progress.
Apply Today: If you are ready to make a tangible difference in the education of young people with sensory needs, please submit your CV and a brief cover letter outlining your relevant experience.
