SEND Specialist Tutor (SEMH & Complex Needs - Year 11)
Here at Prospero Teaching, we work in partnership with local SEND teams and schools across the North East. We are currently seeking a dedicated Specialist Tutor to support a Year 11 student with complex Special Educational Needs (SEN) in Sunderland.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a SEND Tutor who can deliver consistent, structured, and engaging sessions tailored to a Year 11 student with complex needs in Sunderland. The main focus of this role is to re-engage the learner with education, build trust, and support their emotional wellbeing during an important transition period.
Your background may be in tutoring or a classroom setting; however, your ability to adapt, remain patient, and prioritise engagement and relationship-building will be essential. This role is less about traditional academic delivery and more about creating a safe, supportive environment where the student can rebuild confidence, develop positive routines, and prepare for their next steps.

- Type of work - Contract
- Start date - ASAP
- Setting - Student's home or local community setting (e.g. learning hub/library)
- Duration - Ongoing, until a suitable school placement is secured
- Contract type - Temporary
- Hours - 15 hours per week
- Rate of pay - up to £30 per hour (negotiable)

Build a positive and trusting relationship to support engagement in learning
- Deliver tailored, engagement-focused sessions that meet the needs of a Year 11 learner
- Support the student's SEMH development, helping them regulate emotions and build resilience
- Provide guidance and structure during a key stage in their education and transition planning
- Promote confidence, independence, and life skills through structured activities
- Create a calm, consistent, and safe learning environment
- Monitor and assess progress, providing clear feedback to families and professionals
- Maintain accurate records of attendance and complete weekly reports
Experience, Training and Qualifications of the SEND Specialist Tutor:

Children-related or Education-based qualification
- Experience working with students with complex SEND and SEMH needs
- Background in teaching, tutoring, or support work
- Patient, resilient, and creative approach to learning
- Ability to think outside the box and adapt sessions to maintain engagement
