Specialist Complex Needs Mentor
London Borough of Havering
Temp to Perm - September 2026 Start
£95 - £110 per day PAYE
Some children communicate through words. Others communicate through behaviour, routines, sensory needs, or simply by learning to trust the adults around them.
This specialist school in Havering supports children and young people with complex needs, including autism, severe learning difficulties, sensory processing differences and medical needs. The school is looking for compassionate, patient individuals who understand that progress looks different for every child.
You do not need years of school-based experience to be successful in this role.
Perhaps you have worked in care, support work, residential settings or mental health. Perhaps you have supported a sibling, child or family member with additional needs. What matters most is your ability to build positive relationships, remain calm during challenging moments, and genuinely enjoy helping children feel safe, understood and successful.
What will the role involve?
You will work closely with pupils throughout the school day, helping them access learning, develop communication skills and navigate social situations that can often feel overwhelming.
Some days you might be supporting a pupil to engage in a classroom activity for the first time. Other days you may be helping a child regulate their emotions, use communication aids, follow routines, or build confidence in new situations.
You will be part of a highly supportive team of teachers, therapists and specialist staff who work collaboratively to ensure every pupil receives the support they need.
This role could be a great fit if you have experience in:
- SEND or specialist education
- Care or support work
- Residential childcare
- Youth work or mentoring
- Mental health support
- Psychology, social care or related studies
- Supporting someone with SEND in your personal life
What the school is looking for:
- Patience and emotional resilience
- A calm and consistent approach
- A genuine interest in supporting children with additional needs
- Someone who is reliable, proactive and keen to learn
- A long-term commitment to working within SEND
This is a role where small achievements can have a huge impact. The right person will leave each day knowing they have helped a child feel more confident, more independent and more understood than they did the day before.
Interviews will take place next week for September Start
