Tango is looking for an experienced and motivated Sous Chef to join our kitchen team in Durham.
We are a busy, independent restaurant serving freshly prepared burgers, small plates and seasonal dishes. We are looking for someone who can support the Head Chef, lead the kitchen confidently and help maintain consistently high standards.
The role
As Sous Chef, you will work closely with the Head Chef to manage the day-to-day running of the kitchen. You will take responsibility for the team during the Head Chef’s absence and help ensure every service runs smoothly.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and motivating the kitchen team during service
- Supporting with food preparation, service and kitchen organisation
- Maintaining high standards of food quality and presentation
- Assisting with stock control, ordering and waste management
- Helping manage food costs and achieve gross profit targets
- Ensuring food safety, allergen and hygiene procedures are followed
- Training and developing junior members of the kitchen team
- Supporting menu development and seasonal specials
- Maintaining a clean, organised and professional kitchen
About you
We are looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience as a Sous Chef or strong Junior Sous Chef
- Is confident leading a kitchen team during busy services
- Has excellent organisation and communication skills
- Takes pride in producing consistently high-quality food
- Understands stock control, portion control and kitchen costs
- Has a strong knowledge of food hygiene and allergen procedures
- Is reliable, calm under pressure and willing to lead by example
- Enjoys working in a busy, independent restaurant environment

Tango is a busy venue, particularly during weekends, university events and graduation periods, so flexibility is required. However, rotas are planned in advance and we aim to provide a fair and well-organised working environment.
