Job Purpose:
The Finance Assistant will provide essential support to the finance function, ensuring accurate financial processes, strong commercial administration, and smooth reporting support
To provide financial support to the finance team by assisting with accounts payable, financial reporting and administration, ensuring accurate and timely information to support financial analysis, commercial decision-making, and overall business performance.
This role suits someone highly organised, analytical, and confident working with numbers, data, and supplier and client information.
Accountabilities
Financial Support
- Process purchase orders, invoices, and supplier documentation.
- Reconcile supplier statements and support month-end processes.
- Maintain accurate financial records and update finance systems.
- Managing accounts payable and support the finance team with processing invoices, purchase orders, and expense claims accurately and on time.
- Reconciliation of company fuel cards
- Assist with weekly/monthly payment runs
- Organising & filing of financial records
- Assist with month end PL accruals/ open PO review
- Daily reconciliation of bank account(s)
- Review and track direct debits
- Communicate with suppliers regarding invoice queries and liaise with other departments
Administrative & Operational Support
- Ensure smooth communication between finance, commercial, and operational teams.
- Provide general administrative support, including documentation management.
- Assist with internal audits and compliance checks.
- Liaise with internal teams, suppliers, and clients on financial and commercial queries as required
- Maintain accurate records and ensure adherence to internal controls, company policies, and contractual obligations.
Skills Training and Knowledge Required
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in financial and commercial administration
- Experience with accounting systems in particular XERO, ApprovalMax and Microsoft Excel (formulas, spreadsheets, reporting).
- Knowledge of financial controls, compliance requirements, and internal processes.
Analytical & Organisational Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial and commercial records.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
- Analytical skills to interpret data, highlight trends, and support decision-making.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to liaise effectively with project teams, suppliers, clients, and finance colleagues.
- Collaborative approach to support both finance and commercial functions.
Training & Qualifications:
- A recognised qualification in accounting or finance preferably AAT level 2 is essential
- On-the-job training in company finance systems and project commercial processes.
Knowledge:
- Basic accounting principles and project finance processes.
- Understanding of civil engineering, construction, or infrastructure project operations (road & rail) is advantageous.
- Awareness of statutory, contractual, and regulatory obligations relevant to commercial and financial administration.
- Understanding of Domestic Reverse Charge VAT is desirable but not essential
Pay: Up to £26,500.00 per year
