About the Role
Autism Family Support is looking for caring, reliable and enthusiastic volunteers to join our team as Volunteer Autism Support Assistants. This is a meaningful opportunity to support autistic children, young people and families in a friendly, inclusive and supportive environment.
As a volunteer, you will help individuals with autism take part in activities, build confidence, develop communication and social skills, and feel safe and supported during sessions. You will work alongside our team, families and other volunteers to create a calm, welcoming and positive space for everyone.
Main Responsibilities
Your role may include:
Supporting autistic children, young people or individuals during group sessions, activities and community events.
Helping participants with social interaction, communication, play, learning and confidence-building activities.
Assisting with daily session routines, including welcoming families, setting up activities and supporting transitions.
Encouraging independence, positive behaviour and participation in a safe and respectful way.
Supporting recreational, sensory, creative and wellbeing activities.
Working closely with staff, parents, carers and other volunteers to meet individual needs.
Helping to monitor progress and sharing any concerns with the session lead or safeguarding lead.
Keeping basic records where required and following Autism Family Support policies and procedures.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for volunteers who are:
Kind, patient, compassionate and understanding.
Interested in supporting autistic children, young people and families.
Good at communicating in English, both verbally and in writing.
Reliable, punctual and willing to work as part of a team.
Confident using basic IT or willing to learn, especially for simple documentation or communication.
Respectful of confidentiality, safeguarding and individual needs.
Able to stay calm and supportive in different situations.
Previous experience with autism, SEND, childcare, care work, education, dementia care or community support is helpful, but not essential. Full guidance and support will be provided.
Skills and Experience
Experience or knowledge in any of the following would be an advantage:
Autism or SEND support
Childcare, education or youth work
Health and social care
Dementia care or personal support
Community volunteering
Safeguarding awareness
Communication support
Sensory play or recreational activities
Relevant qualifications in special education, health and social care, childcare or related areas are welcomed but not mandatory.
