As an HGV Class 1 Driver at NewCold, you will play a key role in safe and efficient transport operations that keep our cold chain running smoothly. You will be responsible for transporting goods securely and on time, maintaining compliance with safety and temperature standards, and representing NewCold with professionalism on every journey.
Vacancy Details
- Shift Pattern: 4 on 4 off (Day Shift)
- Start times: 2:00am, 2:30am, 3:00am, 3:30am and 4:00am
- Guaranteed minimum hours 10 hours per day, 35 hours average per week.
Main Responsibilities
- Safely transport goods between RDCs, customer locations and NewCold sites, ensuring all deliveries and collections are completed on time and in full.
- Conduct accurate pre-use and post-use vehicle checks in line with DVSA and company standards, ensuring defects are reported promptly and recorded correctly.
- Ensure all loads are correctly secured, temperature compliant and safe for transit prior to departure and throughout the journey.
- Maintain full compliance with driver hours legislation and working time rules, proactively managing your driving time, breaks and rest periods.
- Drive in a safe and lawful manner at all times, adhering to UK road traffic legislation and company policies, protecting yourself, colleagues, the public and the business reputation.
- Ensure tachograph records are accurate, up to date and downloaded in line with company requirements.
- Follow all Health and Safety procedures, including the correct use of PPE and safe systems of work whilst on site and on the road.
- Immediately report any accidents, incidents, near misses or compliance concerns in line with internal processes.
- Maintain effective and professional communication with the traffic office, including participation in pre-brief and debrief processes to flag delays, issues or risks.
- Represent NewCold professionally at all times when interacting with customers, suppliers and the public.
- Ensure vehicles, trailers and equipment are kept clean, presentable and in good working order at all times.
- Take responsibility for the security of the vehicle and load, minimising risk of damage, loss or contamination.
- Demonstrate flexibility to support different shift patterns, working hours and overtime requirements in line with business needs.
- Engage with training and development opportunities, including CPC training and in-house upskilling.
Realistic Earnings
- £36,323.04 (based on 12-hour shifts) plus:
- £70 additional shift allowance per extra shift
- £25 tax-free meal allowance (nights out)

Role Requirements
- Valid HGV Class C+E licence.
- Driver CPC qualification (or willingness to obtain with company support).
- Proven Class 1 driving experience (2 years or more).
- Ability and willingness to work a minimum of 12 hour shifts in line with operational demand.
- Strong understanding of Drivers’ Hours Regulations and Working Time Directive rules.
- Commitment to health and safety, compliance and safe systems of work.
- Ability to complete vehicle checks, defect reporting and documentation accurately.
- Experience within temperature-controlled or cold chain logistics (desirable).
