A vacancy has arisen for a Quantity Surveyor to join our Engineering projects team based in Barnsley.
The Quantity Surveyor role exists to work either alone or as part of a team to provide commercial management within the engineering and projects business for Hargreaves Industrial Services.
The role briefly encompasses the following duties: -
Deliver robust cost management across complex, high-value industrial and infrastructure projects ensuring alignment with approved budgets, target costs and tender allowances.
Produce and maintain detailed financial reporting, including Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs), earned value analysis, cash flow forecasts and cost trending.
Monitor productivity, installation rates and labour outputs, identifying inefficiencies and implementing corrective actions.
Undertake detailed measurement and quantification of works in accordance with industry standards, including mechanical, structural and electrical installations.
Prepare, submit and negotiate interim applications for payment, ensuring accurate valuation of installed works materials on site and off-site goods.
Lead the agreement of final accounts, ensuring all project costs, variations and entitlements are fully captured and agreed.
Administer contracts under NEC, JCT or bespoke EPC conditions, ensuring full compliance with contractual timescales, obligations and procedures.
Manage and respond to contractual notices including early warnings, compensation events, variations, delay notices and change instructions.
Prepare, issue and manage all contractual correspondence, maintaining strong commercial positions and audit trails.
Identify, evaluate and manage change across the project lifecycle, ensuring all scope growth is captured, priced and agreed in a timely manner.
Prepare and negotiate compensation events, variations, remeasures and claims for prolongation, disruption and additional scope.
Maintain detailed change registers and ensure alignment with programme and cost impacts.
Lead commercial risk identification, quantification and mitigation, maintaining an up-to-date risk and opportunity register.
Advise project teams on contractual exposure, entitlement and risk management strategies, particularly within high-risk environments such as heavy process industries.
Support the development of contingency strategies and mitigation plans linked to cost and programme risks.
Lead procurement of subcontractors and suppliers for complex work packages, including preparation of tender documentation and commercial evaluation.
Negotiate and agree subcontract terms, ensuring risk is appropriately allocated and contract conditions flow down from the main contract.
Manage subcontractors from award through to final account, including payment certification, variation assessment and performance monitoring.
Administer subcontractor accounts and monitor subcontract liabilities, commitments and forecast outturn positions.
Provide commercial leadership and support to project managers and engineering teams, influencing decision-making on construction methods, sequencing and procurement strategies.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, Tier 1 contractors, consultants and supply chain partners.
Represent the commercial function at project meetings, including progress, risk, change and commercial reviews.
Work closely with planning teams to understand programme impacts on cost, including delay analysis, disruption and acceleration scenarios.
Support claims relating to extensions of time (EOT), prolongation and loss and expense.
Align cost reporting with project progress and earned value metrics.
Ensure robust, auditable records are maintained, including site measurements, installation records, labour returns and commercial evidence.
Maintain full compliance with internal governance procedures, commercial controls and delegated authorities.
Support audit processes and ensure traceability of all commercial decisions.
Contribute to tendering activities, including pricing, risk analysis, value engineering and review of contract conditions.
Support bid teams in developing competitive and deliverable commercial strategies for EPC and industrial projects.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills/experience/ attributes:-
Degree qualified in Quantity Surveyor
Minimum of 1 year post-graduate experience within a contractor environment, preferably on large-scale, multidisciplinary or turnkey/EPC projects
Strong working knowledge of standard forms of contract, particularly NEC4, with awareness of other forms such as JCT.
Sound understanding of contract administration, including compensation events, change control, valuation and payment mechanisms.
Knowledge of construction law, payment legislation and contractual risk allocation.
Highly developed commercial awareness with the ability to manage costs, forecast outturns and identify commercial risks and opportunities.
Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to lead and conclude commercial discussions with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
Ability to produce accurate financial reports, including CVRs, cash flow forecasts and cost plans.
High level of numeracy, with strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
Good understanding of construction methodologies, particularly within heavy industry, civils, mechanical and electrical installation environments.
Ability to interpret drawings, specifications and technical documentation across multiple disciplines.
High level of attention to detail and accuracy in all work outputs.
Ability to work independently, take ownership and be accountable for decisions and deliverables.
Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the confidence to challenge and influence where required.
Collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
