We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our dynamic Cardiac Ward team. This is an exciting opportunity to develop your skills within a specialist environment, caring for patients on a 36 bedded ward with a range of acute and chronic cardiac conditions.
As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred care, supporting patients through their recovery while promoting long-term heart health.
- Deliver high standards of nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care
- Monitor patients’ clinical condition, including cardiac rhythm and vital signs, and respond appropriately to deterioration
- Provide care for patients with conditions such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, and arrhythmias
- Administer medications safely and effectively in line with Trust policies
- Support patients undergoing cardiac investigations and procedures, including pre- and post-procedure care
- Promote patient safety and escalate concerns in line with NEWS2 and local protocols
- Provide education and emotional support to patients and their families regarding diagnosis, treatment, and lifestyle changes
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including doctors, specialist nurses, and allied health professionals
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation

The post holder will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centred nursing care to patients within the Cardiac Ward. The role involves the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for patients with acute and chronic cardiac conditions.
The Band 5 Staff Nurse will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring patient safety, promoting recovery, and contributing to a positive patient experience in line with RUH values and the NMC Code.
Clinical Responsibilities
Provide holistic nursing care to patients with cardiac conditions such as:
Acute coronary syndrome (ACS)
Heart failure
Arrhythmias
Post-cardiac procedures (e.g. angiography, PCI)
Undertake comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualised care plans
Monitor, record, and interpret clinical observations, including:
Vital signs
Cardiac rhythms (telemetry/ECG)
Recognise signs of clinical deterioration and escalate appropriately using NEWS2
Administer medications safely in accordance with Trust policy and NMC standards
Patient Safety & Quality of Care
Maintain a safe clinical environment in accordance with infection prevention and control policies
Identify and manage clinical risks, escalating concerns appropriately
Participate in safety initiatives, audits, and quality improvement activities
Ensure accurate, timely, and legally compliant documentation
Assist with and support cardiac investigations and procedures
Communication & Patient Experience
Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and carers, providing clear information and reassurance
Deliver education on:
Cardiac conditions
Treatment plans
Medication adherence
Lifestyle modifications
Support patients emotionally following cardiac events
Contribute to discharge planning to ensure safe and effective patient transitions

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Registered Nurse (Adult) with valid NMC registration
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively within a team
