What does the average day look like?
We are looking for a proactive and technically skilled Project Engineer with experience in lifts and escalators, ideally within a rail or infrastructure environment. You will have a strong understanding of safety, standards, and asset management, along with the ability to manage projects from development through to delivery. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills are essential, as you will be working closely with contractors, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure reliable and compliant transport systems.
About the team..
Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers.
As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles, ranging from pure engineering to project management. We design and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes which are essential to keep our stations moving.
Who are we looking for?
On a typical day, youll be managing and coordinating the engineering aspects of lift and escalator projects from development through to construction and commissioning, ensuring everything meets Network Rail standards, safety regulations, and environmental requirements.
Youll work closely with contractors, consultants, and internal teams to monitor progress, manage risks, and keep projects compliant, while also carrying out reviews, audits, and site supervision. Alongside this, youll support compliance with key legislation, ensure competency across teams, contribute to continuous improvement by sharing best practice, and take ownership as the designated project engineer for your schemes. You'll be a collaborative professional who can build strong relationships, influence stakeholders and lead continuous improvement initiatives across organisational boundaries. A commitment to safety, innovation and delivering long-term value is essential, along with the confidence to challenge the status quo, take ownership and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Criteria
- Successful relevant experience in Lift and Escalator engineering, ideally with involvement in construction and design projects across multi discipline areas.
- Technical qualifications to HNC/HND or equivalent NVQ level 3 in Lifts or Escalators.
- Knowledge of quality assurance.
- An understanding of the arrangements required for the independent assessment of work.
- CDM, risk assessment, engineering management competency.

Desirable Criteria
- Membership of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level.
- Knowledge of structuring safety cases in support of projects.
- An appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works.
- Six Sigma Yellow Belt.
- Project safety management experience.
- Yellow book course.
- Engineering experience in the lifts & escalators discipline
