Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Fabrication Shop Supervisor to lead operations within a busy, fast-paced fabrication workshop based on a chemical plant. This role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of a skilled team of fabricators and welders, ensuring high-quality fabrication work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with project specifications.
The successful candidate will play a key leadership role, managing workloads, maintaining standards, and driving productivity while ensuring full compliance with UK health and safety regulations and company policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, coordinate, and lead a team of fabricators and welders within the workshop environment.
- Plan, organise, and monitor fabrication activities to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
- Oversee the fabrication of a wide range of components, including:
- Pipe supports
- Access platforms and walkways
- Heavy structural steel frames and assemblies
- Accurately interpret and work from technical drawings, engineering plans, and specifications.
- Ensure all work is completed to the highest quality standards and within tolerance requirements.
- Allocate tasks effectively based on team capability, workload, and priorities.
- Conduct regular inspections of work in progress and completed fabrication to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Maintain strong communication with engineers, planners, and other departments to ensure smooth workflow.
- Identify and resolve technical or operational issues quickly to minimise downtime.
- Drive continuous improvement in fabrication processes, efficiency, and team performance.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to UK Health & Safety legislation, including but not limited to the Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant site-specific regulations.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture within the team, leading by example at all times.
- Ensure all work activities are carried out in compliance with company policies, procedures, and risk assessments.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and ensure safe systems of work are followed.
- Monitor the correct use of PPE and safe operation of tools and machinery.
- Report incidents, near misses, and hazards in accordance with company procedures.
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience in a fabrication shop supervisory role, ideally within heavy industry or chemical plant environments.
- Strong background in structural steelwork and general fabrication.
- Excellent ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and fabrication plans.
- Hands-on experience with welding and fabrication processes.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop staff.
- Solid understanding of fabrication techniques, materials, and quality standards.
- Effective problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Relevant trade qualification (e.g. fabrication, welding, or mechanical discipline) preferred.
- Supervisory or leadership training is advantageous.
- Must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom.
- Good understanding of UK health and safety legislation and its practical application in a workshop environment.
