This is a full-time post for up to one year and is suitable for a resident doctor (core surgical trainee to specialist training) intent on pursuing a career in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. The appointee must have finished their foundation jobs. They must be working towards or have been awarded their MRCS and have a demonstrable interest in medical education.
The post will join a team of 30 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons, 22 middle grade doctors and 15 Junior Doctors. There is also a team of Nurse Practitioners and Surgical Care Practitioners.
Post will commence from 5th August 2026 until 4th August 2027 only. The end date will not be extended if there are delays with start date.
The clinical tutor should make the following contributions to undergraduate teaching:
a. Surgical Specialty Attachment (year 3 & 4)
- Leading ward based teaching for students, including the Surgical Admissions Unit (SSSU)
- Encouraging the development of examination and clinical reasoning skills, pre- and post-operative care, fluid balance and prescribing in medical students through ward rounds, post take rounds, theatre sessions, ward-based teaching and tutorials.
- Providing opportunities for students to practice clinical skills with constructive and structured feedback.
- Contributing to weekly tutorials, which focus on diagnosis and management of patients clerked by the students on placement with an emphasis on, pre- and post-operative care, postoperative complications, consent and fluid balance.
- Running teaching clinics in specific area of surgical practice, which can reflect their personal interests.
- Developing new teaching opportunities for students.
b. Assessment (where possible given the teaching requirements of the programme)
- To assist in question writing, emendation and standard setting of undergraduate medical exams (knowledge and clinical)
- To train as an examiner for OSCE examinations
c. Completion of a Certificate or Diploma in Medical Education – this will be funded by the SIFT committee and should be undertaken in Swansea University unless there are extenuating circumstances.
This post is open to resident doctors interested in pursuing a career in trauma and orthopaedic surgery.
Applicants can spend up to two sessions per week towards their specialty training. Integrating learning opportunities into these sessions is encouraged, for example supporting students in theatre.

Swansea also has excellent sporting facilities including the Wales National pool and liberty stadium home to the Ospreys and Swansea City football club.
