About the role
Applications are invited for the 2026/2027 year for non-SET Registrar positions (two or more years post-graduation) at Waikato Hospital.
We are seeking doctors who have an interest in pursuing a surgical or critical care career pathway. Candidates who have completed two years postgraduate hospital experience, including a variety of surgical experience, will be considered. This is an excellent opportunity to experience cardiothoracic surgery whilst working in a supportive environment.
The Waikato cardiac unit performs over 450 open heart procedures a year with active TAVI, aortic, and complex cardiac pathways and around 200 thoracic cases with active thoracoscopy services, including uni and multiportal access.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to:
- manage outpatients and inpatients in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department under the supervision of the Cardiothoracic Surgeon
- participate in the on-call registrar roster
- participate in departmental meetings and be involved in teaching
- conduct research and quality improvement projects.

About the Team/Service
Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital and the major tertiary referral center providing specialised and emergency healthcare for the Te Manawa Taki and Waikato area, with patients catchment of ~1,007,000 people. It is the only major hospital in New Zealand to offer all surgical specialties on one campus, and is the major trauma hospital for the Te Manawa Taki region.
Waikato Hospital is located in Hamilton city, the third largest city in the North Island, and is an hour and a half drive south of Auckland. Hamilton offers a superb lifestyle and quality-of-life working environment. As the largest employer in Hamilton, there is a varied and approachable social network based around the hospital, and it is within easy reach of both West Coast surfing and East Coast leisure beaches. About you
As a Cardiothoracic Registrar, you will be:
- PGY3 or equivalent
- experienced in plastics (a bonus, but not required)
- eligible to work in New Zealand.
Our registrars are expected to involve themselves in divisional research activities and prepare presentations for research events. Our preference is to offer 12-month positions, as this gives our registrars enough exposure to the specialty and to complete the necessary research projects to improve their CV.
