Nestled in the heart of East Devon, The Bowd Inn is a well-loved country pub offering hearty, home-cooked food in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Known for our warm atmosphere, characterful setting, and loyal customer base, we’re now looking for a motivated and hands-on Assistant Manager to join our friendly team and work closely alongside the owner.
About the Role
This is a varied and rewarding full-time role, ideal for someone with prior experience in a similar hospitality setting – especially in pubs with guest accommodation. You’ll play a key part in the day-to-day operations of the business, ensuring smooth service, assisting the management of the team and helping to grow our reputation and footfall through strong operational and promotional support.

Key Responsibilities
- Team Management: Support the oversight and motivate front-of-house and back-of-house staff, lead by example and maintain high standards of service and professionalism.
- Rotas & Scheduling: Support with creating and managing the weekly staff rotas, ensuring adequate cover and labour control.
- Stock & Ordering: Support with handling the ordering responsibilities, manage supplier relationships, maintain stock levels and conduct regular stocktakes.
- Cash & Financial Control: Support with managing tills, cash handling, daily reconciliation and support owner with financial reporting.
- Promotions & Footfall Growth: Assist in planning and delivering engaging in-house events, local promotions and seasonal campaigns to increase footfall and community engagement.
- Key Holder Duties: Open and close the premises, handle emergencies and ensure venue security when the owner is off-site.
- Customer Experience: Deliver exceptional customer service and step in to resolve issues calmly and professionally when needed.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Previous experience in a pub or inn environment, ideally one with accommodation offering
- Willing to bring ideas to the table
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Organised, reliable and comfortable working independently when required
- Experience with cash handling, rotas, ordering and stock control
- Passionate about hospitality and people
- A flexible, positive attitude with a hands-on approach
- Knowledge of cellar management and basic food hygiene an advantage
