Key Responsibilities
- Plan and prepare nutritious, appetising meals for residents in line with their dietary and nutritional requirements
- Maintain detailed knowledge of residents' dietary needs, allergies, medical conditions and texture requirements (pureed, soft, fortified)
- Prepare specialist meals for residents requiring therapeutic diets (diabetic, low-sodium, renal, etc.)
- Manage food storage, inventory and preparation areas in accordance with food safety and hygiene legislation (FSA standards)
- Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the kitchen, including COSHH compliance for food preparation
- Prepare daily menus that are varied, nutritionally balanced and cater to residents' cultural preferences and tastes
- Liaise with care staff regarding resident nutritional concerns, weight loss or changes in appetite
- Maintain detailed records of meal preparation and any modifications for individual residents
- Manage and train kitchen staff and ensure consistent standards of food preparation and presentation
- Order food supplies and manage kitchen budgets within approved parameters
- Participate in infection control training and maintain food hygiene certification
- Ensure all food is stored and handled in accordance with Food Standards Agency guidance
- Support the organisation of special events, celebrations and themed meals for residents
- Respond to residents' feedback regarding meals and adapt menus as appropriate
- Maintain compliance with health and safety regulations, including manual handling and fire safety
- Report any food safety concerns or pest control issues immediately
- Prepare Birthday cake for resident.
- Support with events and gathering at the care home
Person SpecificationEssential Criteria
- Formal culinary qualification or equivalent (NVQ Level 2 or above in Catering)
- Food Hygiene Certification (Level 2 minimum or equivalent)
- Minimum 3 years' experience cooking in a catering or care environment
- Strong understanding of nutrition and specialised dietary needs
- Knowledge of therapeutic diets and meal modifications
- Excellent food preparation and presentation skills
- Ability to manage budgets and plan menus
- Understanding of Food Standards Agency guidance and food safety
- Reliable and organised with strong attention to detail
- Enhanced DBS clearance (no safeguarding concerns)
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable Criteria
- Experience cooking for elderly or vulnerable populations
- Knowledge of dementia-friendly food preparation techniques
- Qualification in nutritional awareness or specialist dietary training
- Experience managing a care home kitchen or similar healthcare catering environment
- Food Hygiene Level 3 certification
- Allergen awareness or formal allergen training
Terms and Conditions
This is a regulated care home. All staff are required to comply with Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, CQC registration requirements, and all care home policies and procedures. An Enhanced DBS clearance is mandatory. All staff must engage in mandatory training and professional development.
