Targeted Intervention Learning Support Assistant
About the Role
This role will involve delivering targeted support to pupils with additional needs, both within the classroom and through small group or 1:1 interventions. The setting promotes structured routines, adapted teaching approaches, and a nurturing environment where every learner is encouraged to reach their full potential.
The position is available to start as soon as possible, with continuity into the new academic year, and there is also flexibility for candidates who are available to begin at the start of the next academic year.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of differentiated and accessible lessons by working closely with teaching staff to break down tasks into manageable steps, scaffold learning, and adapt resources to meet individual needs.
- Deliver targeted interventions (1:1 or small group) to reinforce key skills such as literacy, numeracy, communication, and social development, ensuring pupils with SEND can confidently engage with the curriculum.
- Use structured and supportive strategies—including visual aids, clear step-by-step instructions, modelling, repetition, and hands-on learning activities—to maximise participation and maintain pupil focus.
- Monitor and track pupil progress during interventions, providing feedback to teaching staff to inform planning and next steps in learning.
- Foster positive learning behaviours by offering calm, consistent support, helping pupils regulate emotions, and guiding them back into learning in a supportive and patient manner.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to promote confidence, independence, and a sense of achievement.
- Support pupils with additional needs such as ASD, ADHD, communication difficulties, and SEMH, adapting approaches to suit individual learning styles.
Pre-requisites:
- Experience supporting or delivering structured learning activities for children or young people within schools, tutoring environments, care settings, youth work, or similar educational contexts.
- A good understanding of special educational needs (SEND), with the ability to adapt support strategies to help pupils access learning effectively and make progress.
- Confidence in using a range of teaching and learning approaches, including explaining tasks clearly, modelling processes, breaking down instructions, and maintaining pupil engagement.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent when supporting pupils with additional behavioural or emotional needs.
- Relevant training or qualifications such as Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Youth Work, or equivalent hands-on experience in a similar role.
- A proactive and flexible attitude, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and respond to the varying needs of pupils throughout the school day.
