We offer a wide range of courses to a diverse client base, but predominantly primary schools throughout the busy months. Who is the “right person”? Are you an outdoors person? Are you already a Climber, a Caver or a Kayaker? Do you enjoy being outdoors, no matter what the weather? Can you pass on your passion and skills to others? Do you have an affinity with nature,
the environment, the world we live in?
The position is initially 13 months long, consisting of 37.5 hours a week which can include weekend and evening work. You will be working toward a Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification as well as National Governing Body Award qualifications and getting valuable workplace experience in an enthusiastic and supportive team.
While working at Carlton Lodge you will be trained in the following qualifications:
Level 3 Outdoor Activity instructor Standard
Functional Skills in Maths & English if required
ITC Level 3 in Outdoor First Aid
A wider skills package of learner development courses as part of the programme. This includes a range of Practical Skills Development Courses, NGB and First Aid training, Education, Training and Assessment courses and Learning Beyond the Classroom.
Day to Day Duties:
- To attend daily morning meetings and other meetings as necessary
- To learn to punctually set-up and prepare for each day’s activities
- To learn to deliver high quality activity sessions
- To always act as a positive role model for young people
- To carry out any other reasonable duties around centre as agreed with your
- line manager
Desirable Qualifications Required:
- GCSE’s Grade 4/3
- Level 2 English and Maths – GCSE Grade C/4 or above or L2 Functional skills in English and Maths
Skills Required:
Desirable: Experience of working with young people, Full UK driving license.
Essential:
- Ability to relate to young people
- Ability to work effectively on own initiative and as part of a team
- Excellent organisational skills
- Ability to be adaptable and flexible in working practices
- Willingness to work evening and weekends
- Willingness to undertake training relevant to the job
Personal Qualities: Fun, keen to learn, safety aware, interested in a range of outdoor sports, like working with young people, Punctual, clear communicator, team player.
Weekly/Annual wage: £8.00 per hour (meets Apprentice National Minimum Wage).
Working Week /Hours: 37.5 hours a week – annualised (can include weekends and weekly hours will vary) Hours will vary and be higher in the busiest parts of the summer season.

Future Prospects description: Our busy activity centre has a range of positions that could be offered to the suitable candidate on completion of their apprenticeship, from Seasonal activity instructors (February to November) and Permanent Activity Instructors. There could also be an opportunity to complete their Level 5 apprenticeship. We also are well respected by other local Activity Centres and have had several staff move to full time employment with them. There is also the possibility of becoming qualified and experienced enough to be a self -employed Freelance Instructor.
Other Important Information: We have limited staff accommodation available, consisting of a shared room, bathroom, kitchen.
