1. Purpose of the Role
The Protection & Control (P&C) Panel Wireman is responsible for the assembly, wiring, modification, testing support, and quality inspection of protection and control panels for electrical substations and power system projects. The role involves working in accordance with client specifications, including SSEN, National Grid, SP Energy Networks, and other UK utility standards, while ensuring compliance with applicable safety, quality, and engineering requirements.
2. Key Responsibilities
Panel Assembly & Wiring
- Carry out internal wiring of Protection & Control panels, marshalling kiosks, RTU panels, metering panels, telecoms panels, and SCADA panels.
- Install and terminate:
- Protection relays
- Terminal blocks
- Control switches
- Indication lamps
- Annunciators
- RTUs
- Communication equipment
- Power supplies
- Ethernet switches etc.
- Read and interpret:
- Schematic diagrams
- Wiring diagrams
- Cable schedules
- General arrangement drawings
- Interconnection drawings
- Perform wiring of:
- AC circuits
- DC circuits (48VDC, 110VDC, 220VDC)
- CT circuits
- VT circuits
- Trip and close circuits
- Telecontrol and SCADA circuits
- Dress and route wiring neatly in accordance with SSEN and UK utility panel build standards.
- Install ferrules, cable markers, labels, heat-shrink sleeves, and identification tags.
Panel Modifications & Retrofit Works
- Carry out panel modifications and upgrades.
- Remove and replace obsolete protection relays and control equipment.
- Implement engineering changes and red-line modifications.
- Assist in retrofit projects for existing substations.
Quality & Inspection
- Conduct self-inspections during panel build activities.
- Verify wiring against approved drawings.
- Check terminal numbering and cable identification.
- Ensure compliance with:
- SSEN specifications
- National Grid requirements
- IEC standards
- Internal QA procedures
- Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
Testing Support
- Perform continuity checks.
- Carry out insulation resistance testing where required.
- Assist commissioning engineers during:
- Point-to-point testing
- Functional testing
- FAT activities
- Record test results and snag items list.
Health, Safety & Housekeeping
- Comply with:
- Health & Safety at Work Act
- Company Safety Procedures
- Risk Assessments
- Method Statements
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Properly use PPE and approved tools.
- Report safety concerns and quality issues immediately.
3. Technical Skills & Experience
Essential
- Minimum 10 years experience in control panel wiring.
- Experience with Protection & Control panels within power generation, transmission, or distribution sectors.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Experience wiring:
- Protection relays
- SCADA panels
- RTU systems
- Metering systems
- Telecom equipment
- Familiarity with:
- 110VDC systems
- CT and VT circuits
- Copper control wiring
- Experience with ferruling and cable identification systems such as ProMark or equivalent.
Desirable
- Experience working on:
- SSEN projects
- National Grid projects
- SPEN projects
- Scottish Power projects
- Experience with:
- Siemens relays
- ABB / Hitachi relays
- GE Multilin relays
- SEL relays
- DFR [IDM] etc.
4. Qualifications
Essential
- NVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation or equivalent.

Pay: £25,000.00-£30,000.00 per year
