James Ray Recruitment is seeking a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school based in Ellesmere Port.

The Role
As a Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You will play a vital role in creating a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment where every pupil has the opportunity to succeed.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small group support for secondary-aged pupils with SEMH needs.
- Support pupils in accessing the curriculum and engaging positively in lessons.
- Build strong, professional relationships that promote trust, confidence, and emotional resilience.
- Assist teachers in delivering personalised learning programmes tailored to individual needs.
- Implement behaviour support strategies and use positive de-escalation techniques in line with school policies.
- Encourage pupils to develop emotional regulation, social skills, independence, and positive behaviour choices.
- Support pupils throughout the school day, including lessons, breaktimes, educational visits, and enrichment activities.
- Monitor, record, and report on pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, parents/carers, and external professionals to support individual education and behaviour plans.
- Promote safeguarding, inclusion, wellbeing, and positive mental health at all times.
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEND, behavioural needs, or additional learning needs.
- Previous experience within a secondary school, specialist provision, alternative provision, youth work, residential care, or pastoral setting is desirable.
- A calm, patient, resilient, and empathetic approach when supporting young people with complex needs.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice, attachment awareness, and emotional regulation strategies is desirable.
- Ability to adapt to challenging situations while maintaining professionalism.
- Relevant qualifications in Education, Childcare, Health & Social Care, or SEND support are advantageous but not essential.
