Responsible for
Leading the strategy of the Transport and Maintenance departments, with 2 Transport Managers and a Maintenance Manager reporting in directly to the Head of Logistics. To create a new strategy for these teams, you will need to be commercially aware and drive forward the direction for both of these teams.
Location / Working Pattern
You will be based at Junction 4 Pallets (Doncaster) but travel to other sites will be required in line with business needs.
Core working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Some flexibility to work outside these hours may be required to meet business needs. Contractual working hours are 42.5 hours per week.
Job Role Summary
We’re looking for a commercially minded Head of Logistics to lead the Junction 4 Pallets operation, ensuring transport runs safely, efficiently, and compliantly while delivering a high-quality service. Within the remit of this role, you will also be responsible for ensuring that our vehicles, machines and hand tools are maintained, serviced and repaired in a timely fashion, in line with any legal requirements and to the standards expected to ensure a safety-first culture.
Reporting to the Directors, you’ll lead and develop the team, creating direction and setting performance metrics, covering fleet utilisation, route planning, compliance, service levels, cost control, and continuous improvement to drive efficiency, resilience, and strong operational performance.
Key Priorities
Set the logistics strategy: Lead the medium and long term direction for the logistics operation, aligning fleet, people, systems and service performance with the wider objectives of Junction 4 Pallets.
Commercial awareness – Commercially astute with a strong focus on identifying growth opportunities, monitoring market trends, and maintaining a customer-centric approach to proactively capitalise on emerging opportunities.
Lead and develop the department: Take responsibility for the whole team of Transport and maintenance, prioritising developing the skillsets and upskilling the teams to deliver for the future of Junction 4 Pallets..
Deliver operational excellence: Own day-to-day logistics performance, ensuring robust planning, effective route management, strong fleet utilisation and consistently high service levels across the pallet network.
Champion compliance and safety: Maintain a safe, legal and compliant transport operation, with strong oversight of Operator Licence requirements, driver hours, Working Time Directive, vehicle maintenance, tachograph management and health and safety standards.
Drive commercial performance: Manage logistics costs, improve cost-to-serve, optimise resource allocation and identify opportunities to increase efficiency, reduce waste and support profitable growth.
Improve systems and data-led decision-making: Use operational data, KPIs, fleet information and transport systems to improve visibility, challenge performance and support better planning and decision-making.
Build resilience and continuous improvement: Lead improvements that strengthen capacity, service reliability and operational resilience, while embedding practical processes that support sustainable long-term performance.
Work as a senior partner: Collaborate closely with the Directors and wider teams to ensure logistics supports customer commitments, commercial priorities and the continued development of the business.
Measures of Success
A clear logistics strategy is established and delivered, with fleet, people, systems and operational priorities aligned to the wider commercial goals of Junction 4 Pallets.
Logistics performance becomes more predictable, visible and accountable, supported by meaningful KPIs, accurate reporting and regular performance reviews with the Directors.
Service levels improve across the pallet network, with stronger route planning, better communication, fewer service failures and consistently reliable delivery performance.
Fleet utilisation and operational efficiency are measurably improved, reducing wasted mileage, downtime, duplication and avoidable cost across the transport operation.
The department operates with a strong compliance and safety culture, maintaining robust control of Operator Licence obligations, driver hours, vehicle maintenance, tachograph management and health and safety standards.
The logistics team is structured, capable and high performing, with clear responsibilities, stronger leadership from transport managers and coordinators, and improved engagement across drivers and support teams.
Logistics is recognised as a strategic enabler of growth, helping the business scale responsibly, support customer commitments and strengthen Junction 4 Pallets’ circular-economy ambitions.
About You
You will be an experienced and credible logistics leader with the confidence to operate at senior level while remaining close enough to the operation to understand the detail. Commercially astute, people focused and highly organised, you will bring the judgement, resilience and leadership capability needed to run a safe, compliant and high-performing transport and maintenance function.
Essential
- CPC Transport Manager qualification and the capability to support Operator Licence compliance at senior level.
- Strong knowledge of UK transport legislation, Operator Licence obligations, driver hours, Working Time Directive requirements, tachograph management and vehicle compliance.
- Extensive experience leading transport, logistics or haulage operations within a fast-paced commercial environment.
- Proven track record of managing a sizeable fleet and leading multi-disciplinary transport teams, including drivers, managers and coordinators.
- Demonstrable experience managing budgets, operational performance, KPIs, service levels and cost control.
- Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to balance customer service, compliance, efficiency and profitability.
- Confident leadership and people management capability, including coaching, performance management, employee relations, absence, disciplinary and grievance processes.
- Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to work closely with Directors and wider business leaders.
- Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure and adapt to changing operational priorities.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Outlook, with the ability to use data to inform operational decisions.
- Experience using business management, CRM or ERP systems.
- Experience leading operational change, process improvement or system implementation projects.
Desirable
- Knowledge of heavy vehicle maintenance requirements and fleet availability planning.
- Experience within a pallet network, multi-drop, haulage or time-critical distribution environment.
- Experience using NetSuite.
