As an entry point Bereavement Technician, you will have the ability to work under pressure and maintain personal deadlines to ensure the high level of professionalism to provide a unique cremation service for the bereaved families. The Bereavement Service operates four locality-based crematoria providing dignified and respectful funeral and cremation services to the people and families of North Yorkshire and beyond.
The Service has responsibility for a significant number of open and closed cemeteries and closed churchyards across North Yorkshire, including their maintenance and safety of memorials.
The postholder will contribute towards achieving service key performance indicators. Relevant qualifications will be required to be achieved to carry out some roles. The role is both emotionally and physically demanding. Confirmation of appointment will be subject to a medical assessment. The post-holder will work within one of the locality teams in the service with the potential of working in other areas and tasked on a day-to-day basis by a manager in the locality in which they are based.
Role Summary:
To assist in carrying out a Lawful and Decent burial or cremation of a deceased person, ensuring all practices and procedures as stipulated by the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authority and the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management are conducted with due reverence and respect to the deceased and their families.
Main Responsibilities
Entry-level accountabilities:
- Burial arrangements and Cemetery maintenance In this particular role, you will carry out Burial arrangements, Cemetery and Crematorium maintenance, and memorial safety as this is a career grade you may be able to rise through the grade on completion of qualifications.
- Accurate marking out, digging and back filling of graves, ensuring compliance with cemetery and health and safety legislation. The role is physically demanding, using excavators and other plant/equipment as required.
- Contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of the Crematorium, Cemeteries and closed Churchyards.
- Driving vehicles and trailers to cemeteries and closed churchyards. Must be willing to work towards Category C1E on driving Licence. Training will be provided
- Ensuring correct excavation of burial plot to agreed sizes and depth for interment. Site is safe, clean and tidy following grave digging operations.
- Regularly inspect the cemeteries to ensure the highest standards of upkeep.
- Using machines and hand tools assist in the upkeep of cemeteries, including and not limited to open areas, roadway, paths and kerbing.
Top-level accountabilities
- Memorial Safety and Cremator Technician
- Cremation of the deceased in line with statutory legislation and guidance by qualified cremator technicians ensuring full identification of the deceased
- Undertake the cremation of a human, ensuring compliance with statutory legislation and guidance
- Removal of recyclable metals and adherence to risk management protocols
- Ensuring documentation and identification is correct
- Contribute to the Service memorial safety programme within Council Cemeteries and closed Churchyards for which the Council has responsibility to maintain. This is physically demanding work, using gantries as appropriate to assist in the laying down of heavy headstones.
- Carry out memorial safety and ensuring the data base is correctly updated and risk management protocols
- Ensuring compliance with all legal requirements of the service delivery is of absolute importance, as is attention to detail and time management skills.
Some weekend working and irregular hours may be required to meet operational demand. Full training will be provided.
