New Chapters is a family-run service that offers vulnerable adults the opportunity to live independently but in a supported environment.
We are seeking a dedicated and caring senior support worker in the BS15 area of Bristol to not only provide support to our service users but also to supervise and mentor other colleagues. Due to the needs of the service, we can only accept applications from females with a valid driving licence.
If you want to make a difference working within a caring, close-knit team while also receiving competitive pay and benefits, we could be for you.
About the role
Across all of our services, the people we support may have learning disabilities, mental health conditions and/or autism. You will be joining a service with a single service user on a 2:1 ratio.
Responsibilities include:
- Encouraging the people we support to participate in their chosen activity or follow their interests, which will involve assisting them in the community.
- Co-ordinating scheduled activities for the people we support, using personalised rotas, liaising with others and ensuring facilitated activities and appointments are attended.
- Assisting with personal care, including bathing, dressing, toileting, and grooming, while respecting dignity and privacy, and/or supporting or prompting service users to undertake their personal care (as appropriate).
- Implementing behaviour management strategies when necessary.
- To accurately maintain records and to develop care plans, working to ensure that each service user’s needs, preferences, and goals are consistently met.
- Educating, informing, training and mentoring new/existing team members, at the request of the locality manager.
- Supervising the effective running of the service in the locality manager’s absence.
- Supporting the locality manager with auditing processes.
Shifts are typically 12 or 14 hours and can include weekends. We expect our support workers to carry out sleep-in shifts regularly (perhaps once a week). Sleep-ins are paid extra.
Requirements
- Experience as a senior support worker (or demonstrable experience of mentoring other team members) in a care setting.
- A genuine desire to work with people who have mental health concerns, learning disabilities and/or display challenging behaviour.
- The ability to remain calm, empathetic and level-headed in all situations, particularly if faced with challenging behaviour.
- Excellent communication and listening skills, as you will be supporting people who use various methods of communication.
- Good comprehension of the English language, literacy, numerical and IT skills.
- Ongoing commitment to your own personal development and training.
